About the Author: Selma Lagerlof (1858-1940) was a
Swedish writer whose stories have been translated into many languages. A
universal theme runs through all of them — a belief that the essential
goodness in a human being can be awakened through understanding and love.
This story is set amidst the mines of Sweden, rich in iron ore, which figure
large in the history and legends of that country. The story is told somewhat
in the manner of a fairy tale. |

There was once a man who went around selling
small wire rattraps. He made them himself, but his company was losing money. So,
he had to rely on begging and stealing to stay alive. His clothes were in
shambles, his cheeks were sunken, and hunger was visible in his eyes. His
life was depressing and routine. He was by himself. |

One
day, he had the realization that the entire world was nothing more than a
giant rattrap. It enticed people with riches and pleasures, shelter and food,
warmth and clothing, just as the rattrap did with cheese and pork. The
rattrap closed in on anyone who allowed himself to be tempted to touch the
bait. |

He
was walking slowly and with heavy steps one dark evening when he came across
a small grey cottage by the roadside. He knocked on the door and asked for a
place to sleep for the night. The proprietor was a senior citizen. He didn't
have a wife or a child. In his loneliness, he was relieved to have someone to
talk to. He gave him tobacco for his pipe and served him porridge for supper.
Then he took out an old deck of cards and played "mjölis" with his
visitor until it was time to go to bed. |

During
his prosperous days, the host had worked as a crofter at Ramsjö Ironworks. He
had labored on the property. He was no longer able to work as a day laborer.
It was his cow who kept him afloat. This exceptional cow could provide milk
for the creamery on a daily basis. He told the stranger that he had received
thirty kronor in payment last month. The crofter displayed three wrinkled ten
kronor bills to his visitor, which he had taken from a leather pouch hung on
a nail in the window frame. |

Both
men got up early the next day. The crofter needed to milk his cow as soon as
possible. When his host awoke, the other man did not want to stay in bed.
They both stepped out of the cottage at the same time. The crofter shut the
door behind him and slipped the key into his pocket. The rattraps-wielding
gentleman said his goodbyes and thanked his host before departing. The
rattrap peddler reappeared half an hour later. He broke a windowpane with his
hand and got his hands on the thirty kronor pouch. He took the money from the
drawer and stuffed it into his pocket. Then he carefully hung the leather
pouch back in its place and walked away. |

He
was pleased with his intelligence. Then he realized he couldn't go any
further on the public road. As a result, he went into the woods. He ended up
in a large and perplexing forest. He continued walking without reaching the
forest's end. He realized he'd been walking in the same area of the forest
for quite some time. He believed he had been caught because he had been duped
by a bait. He saw the forest as an unbreakable prison from which he would
never be able to escape. |

It
was the last week of December. The danger, as well as his gloom and despair,
increased with the darkness. He sank to the ground because he was exhausted.
The sound of hammer strokes reached him. He gathered all of his strength,
stood up, and staggered toward the sound. He arrived at a forge, where the
master smith and his assistant sat near the furnace, waiting for the pig iron
to be ready for unveiling. Big bellows groaned, burning coal cracked, the
fire boy shoveled charcoal with a lot of clatters, the waterfall roared, and
a sharp north wind whipped the rain against the brick-tiled roof. Due to the
clatter of noises, the blacksmith did not notice that a stranger had opened
the gate and entered the forge until he was standing close to the furnace. |

blacksmith nodded haughtily in agreement. On one of his nightly inspection
rounds, the ironmaster who owned the Ramsjo iron mill came into the forge. |

ironmaster noticed that a person dressed in filthy rags had moved so close to
the furnace that steam was rising from his wet rags. He approached him
closely and gave him a thorough examination. To get a better view of his
face, he tore off his hat, which had a wide flexible brim. He addressed him
as 'Nils Olof,' and inquired about his appearance. |

rattraps' owner had never seen the ironmaster at Ramsjo before and had no
idea what his name was. He reasoned that the ironmaster might toss a couple
of kronor at his old acquaintance. As a result, he didn't inform him that he
was mistaken. He should not have resigned from the regiment, according to the
ironmaster. Then he invited the stranger to accompany him home. The tramp was
not on board. He remembered the thirty kronor. It would be like throwing
himself into the lion's den if he went up to the manor’s house. |

of his dreadful attire, the ironmaster assumed he was embarrassed. He claimed
that his wife, Elizabeth, had died, that his sons had gone abroad, and that
he was alone with his oldest daughter. He extended an invitation to the
stranger to spending the holidays with them. Three times the stranger said
"no." Captain von Stahle preferred to spend the night with the
ironmaster, according to Stjernstrom, the blacksmith. He walked away,
laughing to himself. |

The ironmaster's daughter arrived, accompanied by a valet wearing a large fur
coat. Edla Willmansson was her name when she introduced herself. She noticed

such a friendly manner. He threw the fur coat over his rags and followed the
young lady to her carriage. On his way back, the peddler pondered why he had
taken that man's money. He was stuck in the trap and had no way of getting
out. |

was Christmas Eve the next day. Breakfast was served in the dining room by
the ironmaster. He remembered his old regimental comrade, whom he had met by
chance. He was satisfied, and he mentioned that he would feed him well and
give him a respectable job. His daughter said that she didn't notice anything
about him last night that indicated he was once a well-educated man. The
ironmaster requested that she be patient and allow him to clean and dress.
Then she'd notice something unusual. With the tramp clothes, his tramp
manners would fall away. |

stranger then walked in wearing a nice suit, a white shirt with a starched
collar, and whole shoes. The ironmaster, despite his well-groomed appearance,
did not appear pleased. He realized he'd made a mistake the night before. It
was impossible to mistake him for an old acquaintance now that he was out in
the open. The stranger made no attempt to conceal his identity. It was not
his fault, he explained. He'd never pretended to be anything other than a
scrounger. He'd asked the Ironmaster to allow him to remain in the forge. He
was all set to put on his rags and flee. |

ironmaster believed the man was being dishonest and wanted to contact the
sheriff. The tramp then informed the ironmaster that the entire world was a
giant rattrap. All of the good things that were offered to him were cheese
rinds and pork bits, all of which were designed to get a poor fellow into
trouble. For this, the sheriff may put him in jail. He forewarned the
Ironmaster that there would come a time when he desired a large piece of pork
and that he would be caught in the trap. |

ironmaster started laughing. He decided against informing the sheriff. He
did, however, ask the tramp to leave before opening the door. Just then, his
daughter walked in and inquired about her father's activities. She was in a
good mood that morning. She wanted to make the wretch's surroundings as
comfortable as possible. As a result, she advocated for the vagabond. She
wished for him to spend a single day of peace with them throughout the year.
She was well aware that there had been a blunder, but they should not expel a
human being whom they had invited and promised Christmas cheer. The ironmaster
hoped she wouldn't have to live with the consequences. |

young girl invited the stranger to sit and eat at the table. The man stood
there silently, helping himself to the food. He looked at the girl, puzzled
as to why she had intervened on his behalf. Christmas Eve was spent at Ramsjo
in the same way it had always been. Because he did nothing but sleep, the
stranger did not cause any problems. They roused him so he could eat his
meals. The Christmas tree was lit in the evening. He reappeared two hours
later to eat the Christmas fish and porridge. He got up from the table and
went around saying "thank you" and "good night" to
everyone in the room. |

girl informed him that the suit he was wearing was a Christmas gift and that
he was not required to return it. He'd be welcome back if he wanted to spend
the next Christmas Eve in peace. The man with the rattraps remained silent.
He couldn't take his gaze away from the young girl. |

ironmaster and his daughter got up early the next morning to attend the
Christmas service. They returned around ten o'clock. The young girl sat down,
her head hung even lower than usual. An old crofter of the ironworks had been
robbed by a man who went around selling rattraps, she had learned at church.
The ironmaster was concerned that the man had taken a large number of silver
spoons from the cupboard. The ironmaster inquired about the stranger as the
wagon came to a halt at the front steps. The stranger had left, according to
the valet. He had left a package for Miss Willmansson as a Christmas present,
despite the fact that he had not taken anything with him. |
