About the Poet
Stephen Spender (1909-1995) was an English poet and an essayist. He left University College, Oxford without taking a degree and went to Berlin in 1930. Spender took a keen interest in politics and declared himself to be a socialist and pacifist. Books by Spender include Poems of Dedication, The Edge of Being, The Creative Element, The Struggle of the Modern and an autobiography, World Within World. In, An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum, he has concentrated on themes of social injustice and class inequalities.

Because they are destitute, their heads hang low in grief. They are poor and have ill bodies that they acquired from their parents. One child, seated at the far end of the room, has bright eyes that seem to dream — of playing outdoors with the squirrels. In the murky, dimly lit room, he stands out from the others.

The classroom's walls are filthy. People have given various charts and images to be displayed on them. One of them is a portrait of Shakespeare, the legendary playwright. His head is bald, and he has the appearance of the rising Sun. The following poster depicts the Tyrolese valley, which is full of churches and flowers, symbolising nature's lovely creations. A world map is another option. To these children, the world is not the one depicted in these images, but rather the one visible through the classroom window. They are enslaved in the hovels. Their prospects are bleak and gloomy. They face a bleak future because their options in life are restricted and bleak. They are a long way from knowledge's blazing light.

They are incapable of comprehending these images.
They despise everyone, and Shakespeare is a bad man in their eyes. They despise
everyone because no one likes them. Desire for affection and acceptance drives
individuals to commit crimes such as theft. The kids are so thin that their
garments feel like skin and their skeleton shows through. This is related to a
nutritional deficiency. They wear cheap, hefty, and uncomfortable steel glasses
with a weathered appearance. Their chances of realising their ambitions and
emigrating have been further harmed by the construction of larger slums. They
would never know what the real world is like until they leave the slums.

These individuals live in these slums because of the
government system that creates them. Because of the educational system, they
are forced to live in slums. They are denied the opportunity to dream of a life
outside of the slums. They've been confined to the hovels.

The poet asks that the authorities enable these children to leave the slums so that the maps on the classroom walls can become a reality for them. Rather than the dark slums, they should be sent to the verdant meadows. The beautiful blue sky and the sunny soft sand of the beaches will pique their interest in learning. Then they'll take it all in. These youngsters will then gain economic independence. With this, the poem concludes with a strong line: "Those who make history glow like the Sun."
