About the Author: Anees
Jung (1964) was born in Rourkela and spent her childhood and adolescence in
Hyderabad. She received her education in Hyderabad and in the United States
of America. Her parents were both writers. Anees Jung began her career as a
writer in India. She has been an editor and columnist for
major newspapers in India and abroad and has authored several books. The
following is an excerpt from her book titled Lost Spring, Stories of Stolen
Childhood. Here she analyses the grinding poverty and traditions
which condemn these children to a life of exploitation. |

The first section describes the author's impressions of poor rag
pickers' lives. Dhaka's rag pickers have arrived. Furthermore, the rag
pickers' village lies in the Seemapuri area. The storms have wreaked havoc on
their fields and homes. They'd travelled to the big city in the hopes of
finding a place to live. However, the reality was unpleasant for them, and
they had to deal with numerous difficulties. They are unquestionably poor and
lacking in a variety of resources. |

Every morning, the writer keeps an eye on Saheb
as he scours the neighbourhood for "gold." The waste is these rag
pickers' only source of income. Furthermore, it is a wonderful thing for the
youngsters. It is possible for the children to extract a coin or two from it.
These are folks with goals and desires. The issue is that they don't know how
to make things happen. There are a number of things they are unable to
access. Later, Saheb works at a tea stall, where he can make 800 rupees and
eat all of his meals. However, this work has taken away his liberty. As a
result, their situation is bleak and depressing. |

The second section delves into Mukesh's life. Mukesh is a young
man from a family of Bangle-makers. Firozabad is well-known for its
outstanding glass-blowing industry. This particular firm has approximately
20,000 children working for it. No one understands or respects the law
against child labour in that country. Furthermore, the living conditions and
working environment are equally deplorable. |
दूसरा खंड मुकेश के जीवन पर प्रकाश डालता है। मुकेश चूड़ी बनाने
वाले परिवार का युवक है। फिरोजाबाद अपने उत्कृष्ट कांच-धमन उद्योग के लिए

These children are imprisoned in drab cells. They also work in
close proximity to heated furnaces. This is unquestionably hazardous, as it
renders these children blind when they reach adulthood. These children also
have to deal with the stress of debt. Furthermore, they are unable to come up
with a solution to this dilemma. These kids have no possibility of getting
out of this situation. |
ये बच्चे नीरस कोशिकाओं में कैद हैं। वे गर्म भट्टियों के करीब भी

Police officers, bureaucrats, intermediaries, and politicians
will all stand in their way. It is considered their destiny or fate by the
women in the household. They simply follow the existing tradition as a result
of such thinking. Mukesh has an unmistakable personality. He's not like the
other residents of the town. This is due to Mukesh's lofty ambitions. He
aspires to work as a mechanic in the future. He lives a long way from the
garage, but he is determined to walk there. |
