About the Author: Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) was a
French novelist and short-story writer. The Last Lesson is set in the days of
the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) in which France was defeated by Prussia
led by Bismarck. Prussia then consisted of what now are the nations of
Germany, Poland and parts of Austria. In this story the French districts of
Alsace and Lorraine have passed into Prussian hands. Read the story to find

The
main character, Buzz arrived at school late that morning, terrified of a reprimand,
especially because M. Hamel had stated that he would test us on participles,
and I knew nothing about them. For a brief time, he considered fleeing and
spending the day outside. It was so bright and warm! The birds were chirping
at the edge of the woods, and Prussian soldiers were drilling in the open
area behind the sawmill. It was all far more appealing than the rule against
participles, but I mustered the courage to resist and dashed off to school.
There was a gathering in front of the bulletin board when Buzz passed by the
town hall. All of their terrible news had come from there for the previous
two years - lost battles, the draught, the commanding officer's instructions
and he kept thinking to himself, What might be wrong. |

The
blacksmith, Wachter, asked him to not go so fast, who was there with his
apprentice reading the bulletin, called after him as he sped by as fast as he
could. Buzz was out of breath when he arrived at M. Hamel's small garden,
thinking Watcher was making fun of him. |

school started, there was usually a flurry of activity, with students opening
and closing desks, teachers repeating teachings in unison, very loudly, with
their hands over their ears to help them listen, and the teacher's large
ruler pounding on the table. But everything was so quiet! He had anticipated
the activity in order to sneak to his desk undetected; yet, on that
particular day, everything had to be as peaceful as a Sunday morning. |

By
looking out the window Franz noticed my classmates, who were already seated,
and M. Hamel, who was walking up and down with his dreadful iron ruler under
his arm. He had to open the door and enter before everyone else. You can
imagine how blushed he was and how terrified he was. However, nothing
happened. When M. Hamel saw me, he politely asked me to take my place as soon
as possible. |

leapt over the bench and sat at his workstation. After he'd gotten over his
horror, he noticed that their teacher was dressed in his lovely green coat,
frilled shirt, and little black silk cap, all embroidered, which he only wore
on inspection and prize days. Aside from that, the entire school seemed odd
and sad. But it was the village residents sitting peacefully like themselves
on the rear seats, which were always empty, that astonished Franz the most;
old Hauser, with his three-cornered hat, the former mayor, the former
postmaster, and numerous others. Everyone appeared to be depressed. |

paid attention to the beautiful language. He admitted the fact that even he
had taken the advantage and skipped classes as well. Franz found the last
class as the most effective one. |

understood the importance of language and also realized the importance of a
thing when it no longer remains in one’s life. |
