The chapter ‘The Treasure Within’ is an interview
given by Mr Hafeez Contractor, an architect, to Ms Bela Raja, an editor of the
newsletter Sparsh. Although the interview focuses on Contractor's childhood and
the events that led him to take up architecture as a profession, it also
highlights that school-going children can be intelligent yet not perform well
in academics. What becomes important, thereupon, is for schools to address the needs
of these children so they may succeed in their lives and bring out the treasure
within them.

The interview begins with Mr Contractor talking
about his nightmares. Being particularly bad at Maths, Mr Contractor tells Ms
Raja that he would have terrifying dreams about appearing for a Mathematics
where he did not know anything. On being asked to talk about his earliest
childhood memories, Mr Contractor says that it was from the third grade that he
started losing interest in academics. What he was interested in was running
around and playing pranks, and he would cheat during exams.

Things took a turn, however, when Mr Contractor
reached the eleventh grade. That was when his principal advised him to rise to
the occasion as his mother, being a single parent, had taken a lot of trouble
raising him. Despite captaining his school cricket team, he didn’t step out
onto the field the following year as the words uttered by the principal had a
deep influence on him. He studied and passed the exam, scoring 50 per cent.
That itself was an achievement for Mr Contractor. He tells Ms Raja that he forgot things very easily,
and thus, he had a lot of difficulty in remembering what he had studied.

Answering Ms Raja’s question on whether he was
pulled up for doing badly, Mr Contractor responds in the affirmative, saying
that he would get caned from his teachers every week. Nonetheless, he would
forget about it and just move on as what interested him was playing and nothing
else. He also divulges of his being the leader of a gang. Indulging in gang
fights and formulating game plans excited him more than any academics. He
detested studies so much that students used to book his textbooks for the
following year since they would be as good as new.

Mr Contractor, notwithstanding, got into the field
of architecture as if he had been destined to get into it. Responding to Ms Raja’s
question on how architecture happened, Mr Contractor explains that although he
got an admission letter to join the army, he couldn't do so because his aunt
had torn up the letter. And when he wondered whether he could join the police
force, his mother suggested that he pursue graduation. The author, thus,
enrolled himself at Jaihind College in Bombay and began learning German. His
German teacher passed away, and Mr Contractor then made up his mind to learn
French, which had tried learning long back. He started paying visits to his
cousin’s house as she knew French. His cousin, whose husband was an architect,
taught Mr Contractor French.

Anyhow, once while Mr Contractor was at the
architect’s office, he saw someone drawing a window detail. He immediately
realised that something was wrong with the drawing, and when he informed this
to the person, the person initially disagreed but later learnt that the drawing
was indeed wrong. This episode, says Mr Contractor, proved to be a turning
point as it surprised the architect. And when Mr Contractor ended up
satisfactorily sketching specific things and designing a house as requested by
the architect, he was asked to drop everything and join architecture. It all
happened by chance.

Following this episode, Mr Contractor was allowed to
participate in the entrance exam and ended up getting an A+. In Mr Contractor’s
own words, ‘and from that day it was a cakewalk.’ Attributing his understanding
of designing and planning to the games he played with his friend at school, Mr
Contractor says that he also recounted Mrs Gupta, one of his teachers,
suggesting to him when he was in the second or third grade that he become an
architect. So, after becoming one, he went to meet his teacher to say he had
lived up to her expectation.

Mr Contractor tells Ms Raja during the interview
that he particularly despised Maths and was very bad at languages, adding that
living in a boarding school was difficult. Stating explicitly that doing well
in academics had little with doing well in life, Mr Contractor goes on to tell
Ms Raja that those who performed well in school were doing ordinary jobs. He
agrees with the general contention that giftedness and learning disabilities go
hand in hand.

Today, being a successful lawyer, Mr Contractor underscores that one has to find one's calling. He stresses that he relates with his client in a way that they would find comfortable, and he does the sketching part spontaneously after analysing his customer.
