Class 8 Chapter 10 - The Comet- II Summary in Hindi and English

'Comet - II' by Jayant Narliker, a continuation of the previous chapter 'Comet- I', gives its readers a glimpse into the plan formulated by Sir John and Dr Forsyth, along with a team of expert scientists, astronomers, computer scientists, nuclear physicists, space technologists, and biologists. It begins with Sir John dropping James (Dr Forsyth) at the latter's hotel and the latter wondering if he had done his 'sums' properly. The reason for his wonder is the peaceful night that shows no sign of an impending calamity. James' doubts apropos Sir John's efficacy also vanish after he reports for the secret international conference, where he finds all the experts listed by him present including the comet’s discoverer Manoj Dutta.

The scientists conclude that the calculations done by Dr Forsyth are right and that it is difficult to avoid a direct collision with the comet. There is a slight chance of the comet passing lightly without touching the Earth's surface, but the experts are convinced that some offensive action is needed to eliminate the threat. Project Light Brigade, thus, comes into existence. It is a code name for an operation that aims to detonate the comet by remote control.

वैज्ञानिकों ने निष्कर्ष निकाला है कि डॉ फोर्सिथ द्वारा की गई गणना सही है और कोमेट्  के साथ सीधी टक्कर से बचना मुश्किल है। कोमेट्  के पृथ्वी की सतह को छुए बिना हल्के से गुजरने की थोड़ी संभावना है, लेकिन विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि खतरे को खत्म करने के लिए कुछ आक्रामक कार्रवाई की जरूरत है। इस प्रकार, प्रोजेक्ट लाइट ब्रिगेड अस्तित्व में आता है। यह एक ऑपरेशन के लिए एक कोड नाम है जिसका उद्देश्य रिमोट कंट्रोल द्वारा कोमेट् को विस्फोट करना है।

The experts calculate and conclude that the comet could be deflected from its path by organising a rendezvous with another spacecraft. They note that a huge nuclear explosion placed, directed and timed suitably could be the only plausible solution. The nuclear payload is to be placed in the spaceship which would then be sent to intercept the approaching comet. The comet would eventually be detonated by remote control. The important dates happen to be October 10 (despatching the spacecraft unless the comet is destroyed by then), November 15 (rendezvous and payload detonation), and December 15 (the date the comet would hit the Earth if the experiment failed).

Even though the plan is charted out, nobody is sure of its success. The success depends largely on the size of the comet. Everybody only hopes it isn't massive. Sir John himself is not sure as he tells Duttada he won't be buying Christmas presents until December 15.

After the conference ends, Duttada stays in Britain, touring for the next two weeks. On his return to India, he is greeted by his friends, students, and others, the press bombards him with questions, and he is expected to perform a sacrificial offering (yajna). Duttada's brother Sibaji Babu tells him that they have been disturbed ever since the comet was discovered. He adds that they have been advised by a Guruji (priest) that a 'shanti yajna' could pacify the evil spirit behind the comet. But it is only when Duttada is told that such a yajna will ward off the ill effects that could be brought on the Earth by the comet does he lose his calm.

Calling the act of performing a holy ritual a superstition, Duttada says that the movements of comets are calculated mathematically, and a ritual can do nothing to save the planet from an impending disaster. He also makes it explicitly clear that there was hardly any connection between comets and disasters. He refused to participate in the yajna.

Duttada, nevertheless, continues to remain in touch with Sir John and their friendship evolves out of their admiration of each other's virtues. While Duttada appreciates Sir John's discipline and efficiency, the latter admires Duttada's scientific outlook. Although their correspondence rarely involved the mention of 'Project Light Brigade', Sir John informs Duttada about the launch of the spacecraft which fills him with anxieties. He pretends to enjoy the ceremonies, celebrations, and other festivals and continues to spend time gazing at the night sky through Dibya. In the daytime, he spends time with his eight-year-old grandson Khoka.

Soon, the comet is visible to the naked eye, and it is only on November 18 does Duttada get to know of the operation's success. He receives a telex message where Sir John wittily states that he is confident of buying Christmas presents on December 15. Comet Dutta passes Earth, being closest to it at a distance of 80,000 kilometres. It is only after the comet fades into the distance that he tells his wife that she had worried for no rhyme or reason. What he hears surprises him. Indrani Debi tells him that his grandson had been deputised to perform the yajna and that it was only on account of the yajna that the calamity didn't take place.

To Dutta, the gap between the superstitious and the rational seems sinister and wide, much wider than the gap between the rich and the poor or the educated and the illiterate. He wonders when society would succeed in eliminating it. 

दत्ता के लिए, अंधविश्वासी और तर्कसंगत के बीच की खाई भयावह और चौड़ी लगती है, जो अमीर और गरीब या शिक्षित और अनपढ़ के बीच की खाई से कहीं अधिक व्यापक है। वह सोचता है कि समाज इसे खत्म करने में कब सफल होगा।
