Seeing a child work as a scavenger or rag-picker is not uncommon in Indian. Nevertheless, what is saddening is the fact that many of us hardly pay heed to the condition that most of these children push themselves to. The story 'Children at Work' is one such tale focusing on the factors that lead children to take up jobs like rag-picking and scavenging.
एक बच्चे को मेहतर या कूड़ा बीनने वाले के रूप में काम करते देखना भारत में असामान्य नहीं है। फिर भी, दुख की बात यह है कि हम में से बहुत से लोग इस बात पर ध्यान नहीं देते हैं कि इनमें से अधिकतर बच्चे खुद को ही इस काम के लिये आगे बढ़ाते हैं। कहानी 'चिल्ड्रन एट वर्क' एक ऐसी कहानी है जो उन कारकों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करती है जो बच्चों को कूड़ा उठाने और मैला ढोने जैसे काम करने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं।
The story begins with an eleven-year-old boy named
Velu arriving in Chennai after having run away from home. He is sad, tired, and
hungry. While the noise at the railway station annoys him, he is flummoxed by
the sheer number of people moving hither and thither. He has nothing to do, and
all he needs now is food.
कहानी की शुरुआत वेलु नाम के एक ग्यारह वर्षीय लड़के से होती है जो घर से भागकर चेन्नई आता है। वह उदास, थका हुआ और भूखा है। जहां रेलवे स्टेशन का शोर उसे परेशान करता है, वहीं इधर-उधर घूमने वाले लोगों की भारी संख्या से वह घबरा जाता है। उसके पास करने के लिए कुछ नहीं है, और उसे अब केवल भोजन की आवश्यकता है।
The story says that the boy runs away from home
because he is unable to stand the misdeeds of his father, who not only beats
him but also snatches money from him and his sisters to feed his alcohol
addiction. Velu boards the Kanyakumari Express and travels in an unreserved
compartment without buying a ticket.
कहानी कहती है कि लड़का घर से भाग जाता है क्योंकि वह अपने पिता की हरकतों को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर पाता है, जो न केवल उसकी पिटाई करता है बल्कि उसकी शराब की लत को खिलाने के लिए उससे और उसकी बहनों से पैसे भी छीन लेता है। वेलु कन्याकुमारी एक्सप्रेस में चढ़ता है और बिना टिकट खरीदे एक अनारक्षित डिब्बे में यात्रा करता है।
Now, sitting outside the railway station, Velu hears
a voice. He looks around to find a girl his age wearing a banian. The girl is
picking up dirty plastic cups from the floor and filling her sack with them.
Velu stares at her first, but she asks him to stop staring. The girl goes on to
ask Velu if he had run from home and if he wanted to become rich. But seeing
Velu keeping mum and pressing his stomach, she tells him she could find some
food for him. Saying so, she makes a move. Not knowing what to do, Velu follows
her, and the first part of the three-part story comes to an end.
अब, रेलवे स्टेशन के बाहर बैठे वेलू को एक आवाज सुनाई देती है। वह चारों ओर देखता है कि एक बनिअन् पहने हुए अपनी उम्र की लड़की को ढूंढता है। बच्ची फर्श से गंदे प्लास्टिक के प्याले उठाकर उसमें अपना बोरे भर रही है. वेलू पहले उसे घूरता है, लेकिन वह उसे घूरना बंद करने के लिए कहती है। लड़की वेलू से पूछती है कि क्या वह घर से भागा था और क्या वह अमीर बनना चाहता था। लेकिन वेलू को चुप रहते और उसका पेट दबाते देख, वह उससे कहती है कि वह उसके लिए कुछ खाना ढूंढ सकती है। इतना कहकर वह एक चाल चलती है। न जाने क्या करे, वेलू उसका पीछा करता है, और तीन-भाग की कहानी का पहला भाग समाप्त हो जाता है।
The second part of the story describes the kindness
the girl shows in helping Velu. She is not just courageous enough to walk
through a jam-packed road but helps Velu cross the road as well. Velu observes
everything around, especially the signboards, but is unable to comprehend them
as the writing is all in English. However, he can read Tamil, and when they
both see the Central Jail from a distance, the girl advises Velu to be cautious
lest he should get caught.
कहानी के दूसरे भाग में वेलू की मदद करने में लड़की की दयालुता का वर्णन किया गया है। वह न केवल खचाखच भरी सड़क पर चलने की हिम्मत रखती है बल्कि वेलू को सड़क पार करने में भी मदद करती है। वेलु चारों ओर सब कुछ देखता है, विशेष रूप से साइनबोर्ड, लेकिन उन्हें समझने में असमर्थ है क्योंकि लेखन पूरी तरह से अंग्रेजी में है। हालाँकि, वह तमिल पढ़ सकता है, और जब वे दोनों सेंट्रल जेल को दूर से देखते हैं, तो लड़की वेलू को सलाह देती है कि वह सतर्क रहे, कहीं ऐसा न हो कि वह पकड़ा जाए।
After an hour of walking, Velu finds himself standing next to a garbage bin. A rotten smell permeates the air. The girl picks up a vada and throws at him, and although Velu feels disgusted, he eats the vada and a banana to satiate his hunger. It is only now that Velu asks the girl her name. Jaya, she tells him, and the second part of the story ends.

The third and final part of the story gives the reader a peek into how young children are pushed to work as rag-pickers. Velu, who is seemingly innocent, is not aware of what kind of life he is going to lead until Jaya gives him a pair of worn-out shoes and a sack. Velu wonders if they are going to work on a farm, but gets puzzled when Jaya tells him that they are going to collect waste to earn money. She tells him of a guy named Jam Bazaar Jaggu, who buys waste items and in turn sells them to a factory. This part of the story drives home the point that someone's rubbish could prove to be a source of income for someone else. Velu decides to do this job until he finds a better one.
