Class 9 Chapter 6 - Weathering the Storm in Ersama Summary in Hindi and English

'Weathering the Storm in Ersama'  tells the story of how a boy called Prashant braved the cyclone that devastated hundreds of villages and towns in Orissa in 1999. It is written by Harsh Mander.

'अपक्षय द स्टॉर्म इन एरसामा' इस बात की कहानी बताती है कि कैसे प्रशांत नामक एक लड़के ने 1999 में उड़ीसा के सैकड़ों गांवों और कस्बों को तबाह करने वाले चक्रवात का सामना किया था। इसे हर्ष मंदर ने लिखा है।

The story begins with Prashant leaving for his friend's house at the block headquarters in Ersama, situated some eighteen kilometres away from his village. In the evening, a devastating storm gathers, a kind of storm that Prashant had never witnessed before. Houses are washed away, people scream, and trees get uprooted. The storm wreaks havoc right across coastal Orissa.

कहानी प्रशांत के अपने गांव से लगभग अठारह किलोमीटर दूर स्थित इरसामा में ब्लॉक मुख्यालय में अपने दोस्त के घर के लिए रवाना होने के साथ शुरू होती है। शाम को, एक विनाशकारी तूफान इकट्ठा होता है, एक प्रकार का तूफान जो प्रशांत ने पहले कभी नहीं देखा था। घर बह जाते हैं, लोग चिल्लाते हैं, और पेड़ उखड़ जाते हैं। यह तूफान पूरे तटीय उड़ीसा में तबाही मचाता है।

Thirty-six hours of incessant rain causes the water level to rise to an alarming level, and the family is forced to resort to taking refuge on the roof. The scene of floating animal carcasses and dead bodies creates a lasting impression in Prashant's mind.  The fact that two coconut trees had fallen on the house of Prashant's friend comes as a blessing in disguise, however; and that is because the tender coconuts serve as food to the family who would have otherwise starved.

छत्तीस घंटे की लगातार बारिश के कारण पानी का स्तर खतरनाक स्तर तक बढ़ जाता है, और परिवार छत पर शरण लेने के लिए मजबूर हो जाता है। तैरते हुए जानवरों के शवों और शवों का दृश्य प्रशांत के दिमाग में एक स्थायी छाप पैदा करता है।  तथ्य यह है कि प्रशांत के दोस्त के घर पर दो नारियल के पेड़ गिर गए थे, हालांकि, भेस में एक आशीर्वाद के रूप में आता है; और ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि निविदा नारियल परिवार के लिए भोजन के रूप में काम करते हैं जो अन्यथा भूखे होते।

When the situation looks slightly better, Prashant thinks of going back to his village as the only thought that occupied his mind until then was whether his family had survived the disaster. While Prashant's family advise him not to get back to the village as things are still in a bad shape, Prashant chooses to listen to his heart and makes a move. He carries a sturdy stick and starts wading through the muddy waters. There are occasions when he swims. When he finds two of his uncles on the way, he is relieved.

The scenes start getting more horrifying as they wade through the waters. They find animal carcasses and dead bodies floating about. Also, not one single house seems to have been left undamaged. This is when Prashant weeps aloud.

Nonetheless, when Prashant reaches Kaliguda, his village, his heart goes cold as he sees only remnants of his house's roof. He finds his siblings and uncles and aunts there. He also learns that eight-six lives were lost and ninety-six houses washed away. Prashant then steps in as the leader of the village and organises a group of youths and elders to pressure the merchant to part with the rice once again.  Branches are gathered to light fire, and the survivors are finally able to eat a proper meal.

A military helicopter that comes on the fifth day to drop some food parcels fails to return. That is when some children are asked by the youth task force to lay themselves down with utensils on their stomachs to communicate they are hungry. That is when the helicopter starts airdropping food packets regularly along with other basic needs. 

एक सैन्य हेलीकॉप्टर जो पांचवें दिन कुछ खाद्य पार्सल छोड़ने के लिए आता है, वापस लौटने में विफल रहता है। यही वह समय होता है जब कुछ बच्चों को युवा टास्क फोर्स द्वारा अपने पेट पर बर्तनों के साथ खुद को नीचे रखने के लिए कहा जाता है ताकि वे संवाद कर सकें कि वे भूखे हैं। यही वह समय होता है जब हेलीकाप्टर अन्य बुनियादी जरूरतों के साथ नियमित रूप से भोजन के पैकेट को एयरड्रॉप करना शुरू कर देता है।  

The orphaned children were brought together by Prashant, and he put up a polythene shelter for them. He also mobilised women. But when the women and children started sinking deeper and deeper in fear, he persuaded the women to start working in the food-for-work programme, and for the children, he organised sports events. Because he liked playing cricket, he organised cricket matches.

अनाथ बच्चों को प्रशांत ने एक साथ लाया, और उन्होंने उनके लिए एक पॉलीथिन आश्रय बनाया। उन्होंने महिलाओं को भी लामबंद किया। लेकिन जब महिलाएं और बच्चे डर के मारे गहरे और गहरे डूबने लगे, तो उन्होंने महिलाओं को भोजन के बदले काम के कार्यक्रम में काम शुरू करने के लिए राजी किया, और बच्चों के लिए, उन्होंने खेल कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन किया। क्योंकि उन्हें क्रिकेट खेलना पसंद था, इसलिए उन्होंने क्रिकेट मैचों का आयोजन किया।

The government's plan to set up institutions for orphaned children was met with some resistance as it was felt that in such institutions children will not get the love they deserve. This would lead to them suffering from stigma and loneliness.

अनाथ बच्चों के लिए संस्थान स्थापित करने की सरकार की योजना को कुछ प्रतिरोध के साथ मिला क्योंकि यह महसूस किया गया था कि ऐसे संस्थानों में बच्चों को वह प्यार नहीं मिलेगा जिसके वे हकदार हैं। इससे वे कलंक और अकेलेपन से पीड़ित होंगे।

Be that as it may, Prashant's wanted orphans to be resettled in their own community itself. Prashant's wounded spirit healed because he had no time to think about his own pain. It is his handsome, youthful face that the widows and orphaned children seek out most when they are struck with grief. 

जैसा कि हो सकता है, प्रशांत चाहते थे कि अनाथों को उनके ही समुदाय में फिर से बसाया जाए। प्रशांत की घायल आत्मा ठीक हो गई क्योंकि उसके पास अपने दर्द के बारे में सोचने का समय नहीं था। यह उनका सुंदर, युवा चेहरा है कि विधवाओं और अनाथ बच्चों को सबसे अधिक तलाश है जब वे दुःख से मारे जाते हैं।
