Class 9 Chapter 3 - Iswaran the Storyteller Summary in Hindi and English

'Iswaran the Storyteller' is a short story written by R K Laxman. It largely deals with a person named Iswaran, who is a cook and an amazing storyteller. In the story, the listener, however, is a man by the name Ganesan. The story about Iswaran is narrated to Ganesan by Mahendra at whose living quarters Iswaran had worked as a cook.

'ईश्वरन द स्टोरीटेलर' आर के लक्ष्मण द्वारा लिखित एक लघु कहानी है। यह काफी हद तक ईश्वरन नामक व्यक्ति से संबंधित है, जो एक रसोइया और एक अद्भुत कहानीकार है। कहानी में, श्रोता, हालांकि, गणेशन के नाम से एक आदमी है। ईश्वरन के बारे में कहानी महेंद्र द्वारा गणेशन को सुनाई गई है, जिनके रहने वाले क्वार्टर में ईश्वरन ने एक रसोइया के रूप में काम किया था।

The story first tells the reader about Mahendra, who, being a junior supervisor in a firm, kept an eye on the activities at the worksite, such as factories, bridges, and dams. He was a bachelor with simple needs, but he had to move from place to place as part of his job. The one asset he had was Iswaran, his cook, for he followed him uncomplainingly wherever he went. Not only that, but he also cooked for Mahendra, washed his clothes, and narrated incredible stories in an inimitable manner. He could also produce vegetables and cooking ingredients out of nowhere in the middle of a deserted place.

कहानी सबसे पहले पाठक को महेंद्र के बारे में बताती है, जो एक फर्म में एक जूनियर सुपरवाइजर होने के नाते, कारखानों, पुलों और बांधों जैसे कार्यस्थलों पर गतिविधियों पर नजर रखते थे। वह सरल जरूरतों के साथ एक कुंवारा था, लेकिन उसे अपनी नौकरी के हिस्से के रूप में एक जगह से दूसरे स्थान पर जाना पड़ता था । उसके पास जो एक संपत्ति थी, वह ईश्वरन, उसका रसोइया था, क्योंकि वह जहां भी जाता  था, उसने बिना किसी शिकायत के उसका साथ  दिया । इतना ही नहीं, उन्होंने महेंद्र के लिए खाना भी बनाया, उनके कपड़े धोए और अतुलनीय तरीके से अविश्वसनीय कहानियां सुनाईं। वह एक सुनसान जगह के बीच में कहीं से भी सब्जियों और खाना पकाने की सामग्री का उत्पादन कर सकता था।

While Mahendra would leave for work right after breakfast, Iswaran would clean the shed, wash the clothes, and have a leisurely bath. He would mutter a prayer while taking bath, lunch, and rest awhile. After rising, he would read a book, usually a Tamil thriller, running into hundreds of pages. 

जबकि महेंद्र नाश्ते के तुरंत बाद काम पर निकल जाता था, ईश्वरन शेड को साफ करता था, कपड़े धोता था, और इत्मीनान से स्नान करता था। वह स्नान, दोपहर का भोजन, और थोड़ी देर आराम करते समय एक प्रार्थना करता था। उठने के बाद, वह एक किताब पढ़ता था, आमतौर पर एक तमिल थ्रिलर, जिसमे सैकड़ों पृष्ठ थे।

While narrating stories, he would try creating as much dramatic effect as possible. Instead of just stating what happened, he would almost try bringing an image of the scene in the mind of the listener besides generating a dramatic effect. He would not just say 'I came across an uprooted tree', for instance, but add how the place looked, what his state of mind was, and everything else that would make the listener listen to the story with rapt attention. Mahendra, on the other hand, would listen to his tales uncritically.

कहानियों को सुनाते समय, वह जितना संभव हो उतना नाटकीय प्रभाव बनाने की कोशिश करता था । बस यह बताने के बजाय कि क्या हुआ, वह लगभग नाटकीय प्रभाव पैदा करने के अलावा श्रोता के दिमाग में दृश्य की एक छवि लाने की कोशिश कर ता था । उदाहरण के लिए, वह सिर्फ यह नहीं कहेगा कि 'मैं एक उखाड़े हुए पेड़ के पार आया', लेकिन यह भी जोड़ेगा कि जगह कैसी दिखती , उसके मन की स्थिति क्या थी, और बाकी सब कुछ जिसके कारण श्रोता को ध्यान से कहानी सुने। दूसरी ओर, महेंद्र उसकी कहानियों को बिना किसी निंदा करे सुनता था।

At times he would get into the scene being described so much that he would start acting like what is being spoken about. Once, while narrating the story of a mad elephant, who collapsed after being hit on its third toenail by him, he told everything that had transpired, creating as much drama as possible. But he did not finish the story. When asked later by Mahendra about what happened after the elephant collapsed, Iswaran simply shrugged off by saying that a veterinary doctor was first called and then the mahout took it away. He also told Mahendran that he brought the animal down by using Japanese art (karate or ju-jitsu).

कभी-कभी वह उस दृश्य में आ जाता था जिसे इतना वर्णित किया जा रहा था कि वह उस तरह से अभिनय करना शुरू कर देता जिसके बारे में बात की जा रही होती थी । एक बार, एक पागल हाथी की कहानी सुनाते हुए, जो उसके द्वारा अपने तीसरे पैर के नाखून पर चोट खाने के बाद गिर गया, उसने वह सब कुछ बताया जो हुआ था, जितना संभव हो उतना नाटक बना रहा था। लेकिन उन्होंने कहानी पूरी नहीं की। जब महेंद्र द्वारा बाद में पूछा गया कि हाथी के गिरने के बाद क्या हुआ, तो ईश्वरन ने बस यह कहकर किनारा कर दिया कि एक पशु चिकित्सक को पहले बुलाया गया था और फिर महावत इसे ले गया। उन्होंने महेंद्रन को यह भी बताया कि उन्होंने जापानी कला (कराटे या जू-जित्सु) का उपयोग करके जानवर को नीचे लाया।

Every day Iswaran would narrate a tale packed with suspense, horror, or adventure, and Mahendra would listen to the stories without being bored, primarily because of the unique way they were narrated. 

हर दिन ईश्वरन सस्पेंस, हॉरर या रोमांच से भरी एक कहानी सुनाते थे, और महेंद्र ऊबे बिना कहानियों को सुनता था, क्यूंकि मुख्य रूप से अद्वितीय तरीके से उन्हें सुनाया जाता था।

Nonetheless, one day he went on to tell Mahendra that the place they were living in was once a burial ground, and he happened upon skulls and bones occasionally. Mahendra, who was until then in a fairly happy state of mind, began shivering with fright, especially after Iswaran spoke of some ghosts he saw on a full-moon night. He also told Mahendra that he had once seen a ghost of a woman which appeared with matted hair and a shrivelled face during the full moon, like a skeleton holding a foetus in its arms.

Mahendra, nonetheless, was spooked but maintained that ghosts did not exist and that Iswaran was imagining them. He even asked his cook to get his digestive system examined. Since then though, he avoided looking out of the window during full-moon nights.

It so happened, however, that one night Mahendra was woken up by a moan. He first thought it was a cat but later realised that it couldn't be since the moan was way too guttural for it to be made by a cat. He did not want to look out but later did so, finding a dark cloudy form clutching a bundle. He broke into a cold sweat and fell back on to his pillow. He concluded that it was some trick played on him by his subconscious mind. But when Iswaran told him the next day that what he had seen the previous night was indeed the ghost he was talking about, a chill went down Mahendra's spine. He handed in his papers and resolved to leave the haunted place the very next day.
