The Last Leaf is a heartwarming short story penned by writer O Henry. It primarily deals with two friends, namely Johnsy and Sue, who share an apartment. Johnsy falls ill in November. Having been diagnosed with pneumonia, she goes into depression even as Sue starts getting worried.
द लास्ट लीफ लेखक ओ हेनरी द्वारा लिखित एक दिल को छू लेने वाली छोटी कहानी है। यह मुख्य रूप से दो दोस्तों, अर्थात् जॉन्सी और सू से संबंधित है, जो एक अपार्टमेंट में साथ रहते है । जॉन्सी नवंबर में बीमार पड़ जाती हैं। निमोनिया का निदान होने के बाद, वह अवसाद में चली जाती है, और सू चिंतित होने लगती है।
The doctor asks Sue one day whether there is
something that is worrying Johnsy. Sue answers in the negative and asks the
doctor if he has something to say. The doctor tells Sue soon after that he
feels Johnsy has made up her mind that she won't get well. He adds that
medicines won't work if she continues thinking that way.
डॉक्टर एक दिन सू से पूछता है कि क्या कुछ ऐसा है जो जॉन्सी को चिंतित कर रहा है। सू नकारात्मक में जवाब देता है और डॉक्टर से पूछता है कि क्या उसके पास कहने के लिए कुछ है। डॉक्टर ने सू को उसके तुरंत बाद बताया कि उसे लगता है कि जॉन्सी ने अपना मन बना लिया है कि वह ठीक नहीं होगी। वह कहते हैं कि दवाएं काम नहीं करेंगी अगर वह इस तरह से सोचना जारी रखती है।
Sue then tries her best to do whatever she can to
help Johnsy come out of depression. She talks about fashion and clothes and
even whistles while working, but all Johnsy does is look out of the window.
Then, Johnsy suddenly starts counting backwards, and when Sue asks what's
wrong, she responds by saying that she will die once the last leaf on the ivy
creeper falls.

Sue tells her in vain that the doctor has said she
would get better, but Johnsy is not ready to listen to her. She does not eat or
drink and says she would want to see the last leaf fall. Sue iterates that all
will be fine. She also asks Johnsy not to look out of the window till she
finishes her painting. Johnsy reluctantly agrees.

Asking Johnsy to sleep, Sue rushes down to Behrman,
who is a sixty-year-old painter. His only dream had been to paint a
masterpiece. Sue tells Behrman about Johnsy and the fact that she is convinced
when the last leaf would fall. When Sues goes up with Behrman, she sees only
one leaf is now visible and that it may fall any moment. Behrman, who notices
this, doesn't say a word. He goes back to his room.

When Johnsy wakes up, she discovers that the last
leaf is still there. She says it will fall today and that she will die once it
falls. Sue, however, tells her that she has to live with her friends and that
she won't die.

Johnsy looks out of the window continually but finds
the last leaf, which seems to have clung to the creeper. That's when Johnsy
feels that she has been wrong throughout. She tells Sue that she has learnt a
lesson and that she has realised it is a sin to want to die.
जॉन्सी लगातार खिड़की से बाहर देखती रहती है लेकिन आखिरी पत्ता वही होता है, जो लगता है कि लता से चिपक गया है। तब जॉन्सी को लगता है कि वह पूरे समय गलत रही है। वह सू को बताती है कि उसने एक सबक सीखा है और उसने महसूस किया है कि यह मरने की इच्छा रखना एक पाप है।
When the doctor visits Johnsy next, he says he is confident she will survive. Nonetheless, he discovers Behrman has pneumonia and feels he may not be able to survive. The next morning Behrman passes away.

When they go to his room, they find a ladder and a lit lantern near his bed. That's when Sue tells Johnsy that the last leaf was Behrman's masterpiece and that he had painted it the night the real leaf fell.
