Class 9 Chapter 5 - The Happy Prince Summary in Hindi and English

'The Happy Prince' by Oscar Wilde is a short and heartwarming tale that primarily deals with the statue of a prince and a swallow. The story begins with the description of the statue of the Happy Prince that stands on a column, gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold. His eyes have two sapphires and a large ruby glows on the handle of the sword he possesses.

ऑस्कर वाइल्ड द्वारा 'द हैप्पी प्रिंस' एक छोटी और दिल को छू लेने वाली कहानी है जो मुख्य रूप से एक राजकुमार और एक निगल की मूर्ति से संबंधित है। कहानी हैप्पी प्रिंस की मूर्ति के विवरण के साथ शुरू होती है जो एक कॉलम पर खड़ी है, जो सोने की पतली पत्तियों के साथ सभी पर  है। उसकी आँखों में दो नीलम हैं और उसके पास तलवार के हैंडल पर एक बड़ी रूबी चमकती है।

A swallow comes to the city. Although its friends have left for Egypt, he is yet to go.  He decides to put up where the statue is and alights right between the feet of the Happy Prince. He realises that around him is pure gold and as soon as he does so, a large drop of water falls on him. He wonders how rain can pour as the sky is clear.

एक निगल शहर में आता है। हालांकि उसके दोस्त मिस्र के लिए रवाना हो गए हैं, लेकिन वह अभी तक नहीं गया है। वह इसे रखने का फैसला करता है जहां मूर्ति है और हैप्पी प्रिंस के पैरों के बीच सही उतरता है। उसे एहसास होता है कि उसके चारों ओर शुद्ध सोना है और ऐसा करते ही, पानी की एक बड़ी बूंद उस पर गिर जाती है। वह सोचता है कि आकाश के साफ होने के साथ बारिश कैसे हो सकती है।

The swallow then feels there is no point resting under a statue as it could not protect him from the rain. But when he plans to make a move, another drop falls on him, and he sees that it is the eyes of the Happy Prince that are shedding the tears.

निगल तब महसूस करता है कि एक मूर्ति के नीचे आराम करने का कोई मतलब नहीं है क्योंकि यह उसे बारिश से नहीं बचा सकता है। लेकिन जब वह एक चाल बनाने की योजना बनाता है, तो एक और बूंद उस पर गिरती है, और वह देखता है कि यह खुश राजकुमार की आंखें हैं जो आँसू बहा रही हैं।

When the swallow asks the Happy Prince why he was weeping, the prince lets on that when he was alive, he had hardly known the meaning of tears as he dwelt in a palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. He also divulges that now being dead, he is erected in a place where he cannot but notice the ugliness and misery of the city and that's what makes him weep.

जब निगल खुश राजकुमार से पूछता है कि वह क्यों रो रहा था, तो राजकुमार देता है कि जब वह जीवित था, तो वह शायद ही आँसू का अर्थ जानता था क्योंकि वह एक महल में रहता था जहां दुःख को प्रवेश करने की अनुमति नहीं थी। वह यह भी बताता है कि अब मृत होने के नाते, वह एक ऐसी जगह पर खड़ा हो गया है जहां वह शहर की कुरूपता और दुख को नोटिस नहीं कर सकता है और यही वह है जो उसे रोता है।

The prince then tells the swallow that far away resides a seamstress, whose face looks thin and worn because of lack of nourishment. The seamstress, the prince tells the swallow, is embroidering flowers on a satin gown for one of the Queen's maids of honour, who happens to be the loveliest. Her boy, however, is ill and asking for oranges; but all the seamstress can give him is river water. The prince asks the swallow if he can go and deliver the ruby to the mother taking it out of the sword hilt.

The swallow tells the prince that his friends are waiting for him in Egypt. He also says he does not like boys and that it is cold, but later he agrees to stay for a night. The swallow passes by the cathedral tower and the palace. In the palace, he hears the sound of dancing and witnesses a beautiful girl coming out on the balcony with her lover. She hopes her dress would be ready in time for the State ball and calling the seamstresses lazy. The swallow then reaches the place and finds the boy tossing in a feverish condition. The seamstress is asleep. He keeps the ruby on the table next to the woman's thimble. He flies around the bed, goes near the buoy, and fans the boy's forehead. The boy begins to feel better immediately.

The swallow, after having flown back to the prince, tells him what happened. He also says that he is feeling warm despite the weather being cold. The prince tells the swallow that he is feeling warm because of doing a good action.

निगल, राजकुमार को वापस उड़ने के बाद, उसे बताता है कि क्या हुआ था। उनका यह भी कहना है कि मौसम ठंडा होने के बावजूद उन्हें गर्मी महसूस हो रही है। राजकुमार निगल को बताता है कि वह एक अच्छा कार्य करने के कारण गर्म महसूस कर रहा है।

The prince requests the swallow to stay for one more day. While the swallow is initially reluctant, it agrees after the prince tells him that a playwright is running short of money and needs help to buy firewood even. The prince asks the swallow to deliver the sapphire that forms one of his eyes, a rare one brought a thousand years ago from India, and the swallow reluctantly does the job. The prince, who is now left with just one eye, asks the swallow to do one more help, that of delivering the other sapphire to a little matchgirl who has let her matches fall in the gutter as she would be beaten by her dad if she failed to get home some money. The swallow first tells him that he would not remove the other sapphire, for if he did so, the prince would become blind. But the Happy Prince insists, and the swallow does the job.

When the swallow returns, the Prince expects it to go to Egypt. This time, however, the swallow refuses and says that he will stay with him and tell him stories. The prince once asks the swallow to go round the city and find out what he sees. He does so and finds the stark contrast in the lives of the people. The prince then asks the swallow to take the gold from his body and give it to the poor. The swallow obeys. When the frost comes, the swallow finally dies. He kisses the Happy Prince on his lips before going to the 'House of Death'.

The councillors later discover the shabby condition of the statue and the dead bird. The Mayor, in fact, feels birds shouldn't be allowed to die there.  And the statue is pulled down. The author finishes the story by saying that when God asks the Angel to bring two precious things in the city, the Angel brings the dead bird and the leaden heart of the Happy Prince. God is pleased and says that in his kingdom of paradise, the bird shall sing forever, and the Happy Prince shall praise him.
