‘The Lost Child’ is a short story written by Indian writer Mulk Raj Anand. It wonderfully captures human emotions, especially those of a child that hankers after everything that pleases his eyes. The story begins with a little boy, along with his parents, heading to a fair as the festival of spring is in full swing. The child is so charmed by what he witnesses on the way that he lags behind even as his parents ask him to follow them.
'द लॉस्ट चाइल्ड' भारतीय लेखक मुल्क राज आनंद द्वारा लिखित एक छोटी सी कहानी है। ये कहानी मानव भावनाओं को बड़े ही अच्छे तरीके से दर्शाती हैं, विशेषकर के एक नन्हे बालक की जो हर एक आकर्षक वास्तु के पीछे लालायित होता है । ये कहानी एक छोटे लड़के के साथ शुरू होती है, जो अपने माता-पिता के साथ, एक मेले में जा रही है क्योंकि वसंत का त्योहार पूरे जोरों पर है। बच्चा मेले में जाते वे अपने आस पास क माहौल से इतना मोहित होता है की उसके माता पिता के उंके साथ चलने के निर्देश के बावजूद वो उनसे पिछड़ जाता है।
While the child lets his parents know that he would like to possess the toys he has just seen, he senses from his father’s eyes that they are not eager to buy him the toys. Furthermore, his mother tries diverting his attention by showing him a flowering mustard field that adorns the way. The child is then beguiled by the beauty of the field even as he tries catching the dragon-flies that fly about.

As the child follows his parents, a shower of fresh flowers falls upon him. He then runs around a banyan tree; and upon seeing the footpaths brimming with large crowds as they near the village, he is repelled and fascinated at the same time.

At the fair, the child first sees a sweetmeat seller, and realising that his favourite sweet burfi is being sold by the guy, he murmurs that he wants the burfi. Nonetheless, this time, he doesn’t share his thoughts with his parents, for he feels his parents will say he is greedy. The child then chances upon a flower-seller. He wants the garland he sees but doesn’t tell his parents, for he feels they will tell him it is cheap.

What he sees next is a man with balloons and a snake-charmer. On both these occasions, the child is carried away. He hopes to own the balloons and also listen to the snake-charmer. However, noting that his parents may give him a reason not to do so, he thinks better of it and continues to follow his parents.

Everything changes when the child reaches a
roundabout, finally opening his mouth to express his desire to play there. But
no sooner does he do so than he realises his parents are not around. The world
seems to crumble for the little boy even as a full, deep cry rises within his
dry throat. Panicking, he runs hither and thither, shouting out to his mother
and father. The yellow turban he is wearing is untied and his clothes get
soiled.

He is tired but doesn’t lose hope. He heads to a shrine after and shouts, ‘Mother, Father.’ A man in the crowd hears his cry and decides to help him. To pacify the wailing child, he takes him about the fair to all the places the child has already seen. But this time, the lost child doesn’t want the balloons or the burfi or the flowers. He doesn’t even want to play in the roundabout. All he wants is to be with his parents.
