 The Tsunami

Before we start the summary of this chapter, let’s understand the word ‘Tsunami’. It is a wave, a very powerful wave. The reason behind a Tsunami can be an earthquake, volcanoes and landslides under the sea. This chapter is about the Tsunami that hit a dozen countries including Thailand and India on December 26, 2004. 

इससे पहले कि हम इस अध्याय का सारांश शुरू करें, आइए 'सुनामी' शब्द को समझें। यह एक लहर है, एक बहुत ही शक्तिशाली लहर है। सुनामी के पीछे का कारण समुद्र के नीचे भूकंप, ज्वालामुखी और भूस्खलन हो सकता है। यह अध्याय सुनामी के बारे में है जिसने 26 दिसंबर, 2004 को थाईलैंड और भारत सहित एक दर्जन देशों को मारा था।

Part - I

In this part, there are four stories shared. The first story is about Ignesious. It was 6 a.m. when his wife felt tremors. He put his TV on the ground and rushed out of the house with his family. When the earthquake stopped, he had lost his two children, father-in-law, brother-in-law and his wife. There was no one left except his three other children with him.

इस भाग में, चार कहानियां साझा की गई हैं। पहली कहानी आग्नेय के बारे में है।    सुबह क ६ बज रहे थे जब उसकी पत्नी को झटके महसूस हुए। उसने अपना टीवी जमीन पर रख दिया और अपने परिवार के साथ घर से बाहर निकल गया। भूकंप रुका तो उसने अपने दो बच्चों, ससुर, अपने साले  और पत्नी को खो दिया था। उसके साथ उसके तीन अन्य बच्चों के अलावा कोई नहीं बचा था।

The second part is about Sanjeev, a policeman who somehow saved his wife, daughter and himself. However, when he jumped into the water to save John’s wife he was also swept away.

दूसरा भाग संजीव के बारे में है, जो एक पुलिसकर्मी है जिसने किसी तरह अपनी पत्नी, बेटी और खुद को बचाया। हालांकि, जब वह जॉन की पत्नी को बचाने के लिए पानी में कूद गया तो वह भी बह गया।

The third part is about Meghna, a 13 years old girl who was also swept away with her parents and 17 other people. However, she came to the shore due to waves and with the help of the wooden door.

तीसरा भाग मेघना के बारे में है, जो एक 13 वर्षीय लड़की है जो अपने माता-पिता और 17 अन्य लोगों के साथ बह गई थी । हालांकि, वह लहरों के कारण और लकड़ी के दरवाजे की मदद से किनारे पर आ गई थी।

The fourth part is about Almas Javed, a 10 years old student. When his father saw the sea-water receding, he rushed to a safer place with his family. In the rush, her grandfather fell. Her father rushed to help but the giant wave swept them away. The wave uprooted the tree that her mother and aunts were holding and swept them away too. Almas climbed on a floating wood to save herself but she fainted. Luckily, she was alive and found herself in a hospital in Kamorta.  But, she was still traumatised. 

चौथा भाग 10 साल के छात्र अलमास जावेद के बारे में है। जब उसके पिता ने समुद्र का पानी कम होते देखा, तो वह अपने परिवार के साथ एक सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुंच गया। जल्दी में, उसके दादा गिर गए। उसके पिता मदद करने के लिए दौड़े लेकिन विशाल लहर ने उन्हें दूर कर दिया। लहर ने उस पेड़ को उखाड़ दिया जिसे उसकी मां और चाची पकड़ रहे थे और वे  भी बह गया। अलमास खुद को बचाने के लिए एक तैरती लकड़ी पर चढ़ गया लेकिन वह बेहोश हो गई। सौभाग्य से, वह जीवित थी और खुद को कामोर्टा के एक अस्पताल में पाया।  लेकिन, वह अभी भी आघात ग्रस्त  थी।

Part - II

This part is about Tilly Smith, a ten-year-old British school girl. Tilly and her family were celebrating Christmas in Thailand. They were at a beach resort on 26th December 2004. Looking at the beach getting smaller and smaller, Tilly sensed that something was wrong.

यह हिस्सा टिली स्मिथ के बारे में है, जो एक दस वर्षीय ब्रिटिश स्कूली छात्रा थी । टिली और उनका परिवार थाईलैंड में क्रिसमस मना रहे थे। वे 26 दिसंबर 2004 को एक समुद्र तट रिसॉर्ट में थे। समुद्र तट को छोटे और छोटे होते हुए देखते हुए, टिली ने महसूस किया कि कुछ गलत था।

She recalled the Geography lesson that she had taken two weeks ago in England. She was shown a video of a Tsunami by her Geography teacher.

उसने भूगोल सबक को याद किया जो उसने इंग्लैंड में दो सप्ताह पहले लिया था। उसे अपने भूगोल शिक्षक द्वारा सुनामी का एक वीडियो दिखाया गया था।

She started screaming at her family to leave the beach immediately. To protect themselves, they rushed to the hotel and took refuge on the third floor. Some other tourists too left the seashore with them. If they had remained on the seashore, they would have swept away by the waves as well. Tilly shared her terrifying story with her classmates when she went back to school.

उसने तुरंत समुद्र तट छोड़ने के लिए अपने परिवार पर चिल्लाना शुरू कर दिया। खुद को बचाने के लिए, वे होटल में भाग गए और तीसरी मंजिल पर शरण ली। कुछ अन्य पर्यटकों ने भी उनके साथ समुद्र के किनारे छोड़ दिए । यदि वे समुद्र के किनारे रहते, तो वे भी लहरों से बह जाते। टिली ने अपने सहपाठियों के साथ अपनी डरावनी कहानी साझा की जब वह स्कूल वापस चली गई।

Part - III

This part is about animals. How they knew what was going to happen and went to safe places to save their lives. There are many people who believe in the sixth sense of animals. They have acute hearing. They can hear the earth’s vibration and sense any coming disaster before humans.

यह हिस्सा जानवरों के बारे में है। कैसे उन्हें पता था कि क्या होने वाला है और अपनी जान बचाने के लिए सुरक्षित स्थानों पर चले गए। ऐसे कई लोग हैं जो जानवरों के अतीन्द्रीय ज्ञान  में विश्वास करते हैं। उनके पास तीव्र सुनने की शक्ति  है। वे पृथ्वी के कंपन को सुन सकते हैं और मनुष्यों के सामने आने वाली किसी भी आपदा को महसूस कर सकते हैं।

This might be the reason behind fewer animals were dead by the Tsunami in comparison to humans. The report says that the number of visitors who were swept away is sixty.  They all were at the Patanangala beach inside the Yala National Park. The report also says that there were no animals dead. 

मनुष्यों की तुलना में सुनामी से कम जानवरों के मरने के पीछे यही कारण हो सकता है। रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि बह गए आगंतुकों की संख्या साठ है।  वे सभी याला नेशनल पार्क के अंदर पाटनंगला समुद्र तट पर थे। रिपोर्ट में यह भी कहा गया है कि कोई जानवर मरा नहीं था।

Poem: Geography Lesson

This beautiful poem is written by Zulfikar Ghose in which he describes his views of a city from the sky. In the first stanza, he tells how the city is developed as per the necessity of the people. Although it looked haphazard on the ground, it looked inevitable from the sky.

इस खूबसूरत कविता को जुल्फिकार घोष ने लिखा है जिसमें उन्होंने आसमान से एक शहर के बारे में अपने विचारों का वर्णन किया है। पहले श्लोक में वह बताते हैं कि किस तरह से लोगों की जरूरत के हिसाब से शहर का विकास किया जाता है। हालांकि यह जमीन पर बेतरतीब लग रहा था, यह आकाश से अपरिहार्य लग रहा था।

When the jet is at the height of ten thousand feet he finds the reason why a country has cities near the rivers and the valleys are populated. People are attracted by both water and land.

जब जेट दस हजार फीट की ऊंचाई पर होता है तो उसे पता चलता है कि किसी देश में नदियों के पास शहर हैं और घाटियां आबाद हैं। लोग पानी और जमीन दोनों से आकर्षित होते हैं।

Now, the jet rises to six miles high and the poet sees that the earth is round and has more sea than land. However, he is unable to see or find the reason why people on earth hate each other, build walls across the cities and kill each other. 

अब, जेट छह मील ऊंचा हो जाता है और कवि देखता है कि पृथ्वी गोल है और जमीन की तुलना में अधिक समुद्र है। हालांकि, वह यह देखने या खोजने में असमर्थ है कि पृथ्वी पर लोग एक-दूसरे से नफरत करते हैं, शहरों में दीवारों का निर्माण करते हैं और एक-दूसरे को मारते हैं।
