Class 8 Chapter 10 - The Great Stone Face – II Summary in Hindi and English

The Great Stone Face – II, the second part of the unabridged version written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, primarily deals with two characters – Ernest and a poet who was born in the valley. This part of the story begins with Ernest having become the wisest man to have ever dwelled in the valley. Although he was obscure when he had been young, his fame has now grown so much that people from far afield including college professors and active men of cities come to meet and interact with him. And Ernest, who has white hair on account of his old age, always receives his guests sincerely and shares his thoughts openly. Never does he mince words, and his face brightens while conversing with the people who come to meet him.

Meanwhile, a poet is born, and although he hails from the valley, he has spent more time living in cities. It so happens that Ernest chances upon the works of the poet, and as if it was destined, even the poet gets to know about Ernest. The poet also decides to visit Ernest after learning about his character even as Ernest questions the Great Stone Face if the poet could be the man mentioned in the prophecy.

The story says that Ernest is moved by the thoughts aired by the poet in his works, and that’s exactly why he feels that the poet could resemble the Great Stone Face. One summer day, while Ernest is reading the works of the poet, the latter arrives at Ernest’s door and asks whether he could take shelter. Ernest readily agrees, and both of them begin conversing. The story says that it was the first time the poet had spoken with a man as wise, gentle, and kind as Ernest. Nevertheless, when Ernest learns that the person he is speaking with is verily the poet whose works he had been reading, he immediately examines the face of the poet and that of the Great Stone Face. His expression – that of shaking his head and sighing – implies that the poet couldn’t be the man mentioned in the prophecy.

Nonetheless, Ernest shares his thoughts with the poet earnestly, and the poet divulges that his life hadn’t corresponded with his thoughts, and so, his bearing a resemblance to the Great Stone Face could only be a distant reality. Turning sad, the poet ventures to say that at times he lacks faith in his own thoughts. The dusk approaches, and in accordance with an old custom of his, Ernest is to address a group of neighbours in the open air wherefrom the Great Stone Face is visible. This time, Ernest takes the poet along for the meeting.

The story then goes on to say that words that Ernest uttered were powerful as they were in harmony with his thoughts which in turn had depth and reality. Furthermore, the words uttered by Ernest, feels the poet, are nobler than any of the poems written by him. This time again, his eyes well with tears, for he thinks there was never even a sage possessing a mild, sweet, and thoughtful face that old Ernest possessed. That’s when the Great Stone Face is seen being surrounded by mists even as the Sun goes down. The white mists around the Great Stone Face look like the white hairs around Ernest’s brow. Ernest’s face suddenly assumes a grand expression which causes the poet to declare that Ernest is the likeness of the Great Stone Face. Ernest, however, remains unconvinced. Heading home with the poet, he feels that somebody wiser and better than himself would appear in the future fulfilling the intriguing prophecy.
