Class 8 Chapter 9 - The Great Stone Face – I Summary in Hindi and English

Mystical prophecies have always allured humankind, and one can only safely assume that they will continue to do so. ‘The Great Stone Face – I’, the first part of the unabridged version written by late writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, happens to talk about one such interesting prophecy. The story, nevertheless, begins with a conversation that a mother and son are having apropos the Great Stone Face outside their cottage situated in a valley. It is said in the story that the Great Stone Face was just a cluster of gigantic rocks on the vertical side of a mountain. Although it seemed to possess features of a human face when seen from a distance, if someone went too near, its outline would be lost and only a heap of rocks would be visible. The people of the valley thought that the fertility of the land was because of the gentle face the Great Stone Face possessed.

रहस्यमय भविष्यवाणियों ने हमेशा मानव जाति को लुभाया है, और कोई भी सुरक्षित रूप से मान सकता है कि वे ऐसा करना जारी रखेंगे। 'द ग्रेट स्टोन फेस - 1', दिवंगत लेखक नथानिएल हॉथोर्न द्वारा लिखे गए अनब्रिज्ड संस्करण का पहला हिस्सा, ऐसी ही एक दिलचस्प भविष्यवाणी के बारे में बात करता है। कहानी एक बातचीत के साथ शुरू होती है कि एक मां और बेटे एक घाटी में स्थित अपने कॉटेज के बाहर ग्रेट स्टोन फेस का प्रस्ताव रख रहे हैं। कहानी में कहा गया है कि ग्रेट स्टोन फेस एक पहाड़ के ऊर्ध्वाधर पक्ष पर विशाल चट्टानों का एक समूह था। यद्यपि यह दूर से देखे जाने पर मानव चेहरे की विशेषताओं को धारण करने सा  प्रतीत होता था, अगर कोई बहुत करीब चला जाता है, तो इसकी रूपरेखा खो जाएगी और केवल चट्टानों का एक ढेर दिखाई देगा। घाटी के लोगों ने सोचा कि भूमि की उर्वरता कोमल चेहरे के कारण थी जो ग्रेट स्टोन फेस के पास था।

The boy named Ernest tells his mother that he hoped the Stone Face could speak, for its kind looks could mean it possessed a pleasant voice. He adds that if he ever sees a man resembling the Stone Face, he will love him a lot. That’s when the mother goes on to tell her son the prophecy that she had heard from her mother when she was a child, and Ernest starts lending a keen ear as if he had eagerly awaited all this while to listen to the prophecy.

अर्नेस्ट नाम का लड़का अपनी मां को बताता है कि काश  स्टोन फेस बोल सकता , क्योंकि इसकी तरह क्यूंकि उसके जैसे उदार चेहरें की बहुत सुन्दर आवाज़ होती वह आगे कहते हैं कि अगर वह कभी भी किसी ऐसे आदमी को स्टोन फेस से मिलते-जुलते हुए देखता है, तो वह उससे बहुत प्यार करेगा। यही वह समय है जब मां अपने बेटे को भविष्यवाणी बताती है  जो उसने अपनी माँ से सुनी थी जब वह एक बच्ची थी, और अर्नेस्ट उत्सुकता से सुन्ना शुरू करता है जैसे वो एहि  सुनने के इंतज़ार में था।

The mother tells Ernest that if the prophecy were to come true, a man bearing an exact resemblance to the Great Stone Face would go on to become the greatest and noblest person of his time. Ernest only hopes to live to see the man being referred to in the prophecy. The story clarifies that even though many construed the prophecy as nothing more than idle talk, there were people who had faith in it. Time passes by and Ernest, who grows to be pensive, mild and quiet, never forgets the story that was told to him. He continues living in the cottage made of logs of wood, assisting his mother lovingly, and whenever he sees the Great Stone Face, he calls to mind the prophecy. The Great Stone Face eventually becomes Ernest’s teacher.

मां अर्नेस्ट को बताती है कि अगर भविष्यवाणी सच हो जाती है, तो ग्रेट स्टोन फेस के लिए एक सटीक समानता रखने वाला एक आदमी अपने समय का सबसे बड़ा और महान व्यक्ति बन जाएगा। अर्नेस्ट केवल उस आदमी को देखने के लिए जीने की उम्मीद करता है जिसे भविष्यवाणी में संदर्भित किया जा रहा है। कहानी स्पष्ट करती है कि भले ही कई लोगों ने भविष्यवाणी को बेकार की बातों से ज्यादा कुछ भी नहीं माना, लेकिन ऐसे लोग थे जिन्हें इस पर विश्वास था। समय बीतता है और अर्नेस्ट, जो जो बड़े होकर  विचारमग्न, सौम्य  और शांत स्वभाव का हो जाता है, उस कहानी को कभी नहीं भूलता है जो उसे बताई गयी था। वह लकड़ी के लट्ठों से बानी  झोपड़ी में रहना जारी रखता है, अपनी मां की प्यार से सहायता करता है, और जब भी वह ग्रेट स्टोन फेस को देखता है, तो वह भविष्यवाणी को ध्यान में रखता है। ग्रेट स्टोन फेस अंततः अर्नेस्ट का शिक्षक बन जाता है।

Nonetheless, there are two occasions in the story when people conclude that the prophecy has been fulfilled. The first one is when a man named Mr. Gathergold, who leaves the valley only to return very rich after a long time, is rumoured to have a resemblance to the Great Stone Face. When he makes an entry to the valley in a carriage drawn by four horses, people shout that he is indeed the man. It is only Ernest who turns his face sadly having realised that Gathergold’s unpleasant face reflecting shrewdness had little in common with the face he has been gazing at for long. It is only when Gathergold dies a poor man do people realise that he was not the man mentioned in the prophecy. Another man, a soldier, who was born in the valley, is then believed to be the man mentioned in the prophecy. Known in the battlefield as Blood-and-Thunder, this man had risen to the rank of a famous commander, and that is exactly what makes people believe that he was their man. This time again, Ernest concludes that they both had little in common and that the man prophesied was yet to make his appearance.

बहरहाल, कहानी में दो ऐसे मौके हैं जब लोग यह निष्कर्ष निकालते हैं कि भविष्यवाणी पूरी हो गई है। पहला तब होता है जब मिस्टर गैदरगोल्ड नाम का एक आदमी, जो घाटी छोड़ने के लम्बे समय के  बाद अमीर बन कर वापिस लौटता है और अफवाह होती है के उसका चेहरा थे ग्रेट स्टोन फेस के जैसा लगता है । जब वह चार घोड़ों द्वारा खींची गई गाड़ी में घाटी में प्रवेश करता है, तो लोग चिल्लाते हैं कि वह वास्तव में आदमी है। यह केवल अर्नेस्ट है जिसका चेहरा ये देख के उदास हो जाता है के गैदरगोल्ड का अप्रिय चेहरा चतुराई को दर्शाता है और उसकी कोई समानता  नही है स्टोन फेस के साथ जिसे वह लम्बे समय से देखता रहता ।लोगों को ऐसा एहसास तब होता है कि गैदरगोल्ड वह व्यक्ति नहीं था जिसका उल्लेख भविष्यवाणी में किया गया था जब  एक गरीब आदमी की मृत्यु हो जाती है, । एक अन्य व्यक्ति, एक सैनिक, जो घाटी में पैदा हुआ था, तब भविष्यवाणी में उल्लिखित व्यक्ति माना जाता है। युद्ध के मैदान में ब्लड-एंड-थंडर के रूप में जाना जाता यह आदमी एक प्रसिद्ध कमांडर के पद तक बढ़ गया था, और इसी वजह से लोगों को लगता है कि वह उनका आदमी था। इस बार फिर, अर्नेस्ट ने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि उन दोनों में बहुत कम समानता थी और जिस व्यक्ति की भविष्यवाणी की गयी थी, वह अभी तक अपनी उपस्थिति नहीं बना पाया था।

Both these episodes – that of Gathergold dying and Blood-and-Thunder appearing – happen after Ernest grows up to be a young man. This part of the unabridged version says that there was nothing remarkable in the way Ernest lead his life and that he was hardly noticed by the inhabitants of the valley. Furthermore, people did not know that the Great Stone Face had become his teacher and that its sentiment was in actuality enlarging Ernest’s heart and filling it with deeper sympathies. Ernest himself didn’t know that the thoughts that came to him were of a higher tone than those of the valley’s inhabitants. It is only in the second part (Chapter 10) does the reader get a complete picture of Ernest’s nobility. 

ये दोनों एपिसोड - गैदरगोल्ड मरने और ब्लड-एंड-थंडर दिखाई देने वाले - अर्नेस्ट के एक युवा व्यक्ति बनने के बाद होते हैं। असंक्षिप्त संस्करण के इस हिस्से का कहना है कि जिस तरह से अर्नेस्ट ने अपने जीवन का नेतृत्व किया था, उसमें कुछ भी उल्लेखनीय नहीं था और वह घाटी के निवासियों से कम हीं मिला था । इसके अलावा, लोगों को नहीं पता था कि ग्रेट स्टोन फेस उनका शिक्षक बन गया था और इसकी भावना अर्नेस्ट के दिल को विकसित करने और इसे गहरी सहानुभूति के साथ भरने की वास्तविकता में थी। अर्नेस्ट खुद नहीं जानता था कि उसके पास जो विचार आए थे, वे घाटी के निवासियों की तुलना में उच्च स्वर के थे। यह केवल दूसरे भाग (अध्याय 10) में है, जब पाठक को अर्नेस्ट के बड़प्पन की पूरी तस्वीर मिलती है।
