Madam Rides a Bus
'Madam Rides a Bus' tells the story of a girl named Villiamai, also called Valli. She has no comrades, and hence, she often spends time just looking at the goings-on on the street outside her house. What she liked the most was the passing of the bus every hour.

She was overwhelmed with joy and exhilaration upon seeing new passengers every time a bus passed by and she even wanted to travel by bus. Quite interestingly, she hankered for travelling by bus and made it her mission. In fact, she started lending an ear to the conversations that her neighbours would indulge in, for they almost always revolved around buses. In this way, she collected the information she wanted.

Also, she was aware that a town was there only six miles away from the village she was in and that it took about forty-five minutes to reach there by bus. One had to pay 60 paise to go there and return.

After learning all of this, Valli planned what can be done so she may easily leave the house while her mother was napping in the afternoon. She also needed to save some money to take the ride and considering she was a young girl aged eight, collecting money was not an easy task.

Nonetheless, she saved money by not giving in to the temptations of candy, peppermint. And merry-go-round. When she had finally saved enough for her to take the ride, she did so. And that was not during the busy hours of the day.

While on the bus, she took no help from the conductor and the passengers, and everyone found it interesting to witness a small girl travelling alone without anyone being there. In fact, the conductor joked, referring to the young girl as ‘madam’.

While she was advised to sit by the others, she only got annoyed whenever she received a piece of advice. She did not even think she was a child and so did not want to be friends with an old lady who had thought Valli was not a social person.

All Valli liked to do was savour whatever she could see outside. The cow running in the middle of the road was not less than hilarious to her. When Valli did reach the town, she did not get off the bus as she was filled with fear and did not want to wander streets that she was not acquainted with.

Be that as it may, when Valli made a return, she was shocked to find a cow lying lifeless and realised in an instant that it was the same cow that she had found hilarious a while ago.

She was terrified upon seeing the horrible sight. She then sat herself down for the remaining part of the return journey. And when she came back, Valli's aunt called Valli a child that pokes her nose on other people's affairs and acts like a grown-up lady, only she did not know about the bus ride.

Poem: The Tale of Custard the Dragon
‘The Tale of Custard the Dragon’ written by Ogden Nash is a humorous poem. It talks about a dragon that is named custard. Custard, being petted by Belinda, is cowardly. The poet emphasises that Belinda is a little girl who dwells in a house that’s little.

While the dragon is supremely timid, all the other pets are brave. The poet, therefore, compares the other pets with brave animals like tiger and lion. But the dragon is always mocked at. What happens once is that a pirate sneaks into the house. While all the other pets of Belinda are spooked, the dragon eats the pirate.

Custard is thanked and others only feel that they could have handled the situation without getting frightened. As all of them are saved by custard, they thank him. But in the end, they realize that they used to make fun of the dragon because of his being timid.
