‘The Hundred Dresses - I’ is excerpted from the book ‘The Hundred Dresses’ written by late American author Eleanor Estes. It primarily deals with three characters - Wanda, Peggy, and Madeline. The story aims at conveying how people are judged based on their possessions, wealth, and appearance. It also tells us how some are forced to side with the people who wrong others despite knowing very well that they too might have to undergo what they are doing to others.

Wanda Petronski is a Polish girl whose family has settled in America. She likes being aloof and usually sits at the corner of Room Thirteen. While it is not clear why she chooses that place to sit, for it is surrounded by the children who are rough and noisy, it is believed she does so because she comes from Boggins Heights, a poor locality, and hence, her feet are usually caked with dry mud. Nonetheless, no one really thinks about Wanda or tries analysing why she sits there. On a Wednesday though, the two inseparable friends Peggy and Maddie (Madeline) are waiting for Wanda to have some fun with her. She, however, doesn’t turn up.

The author says that Wanda doesn’t have any friends. She often comes alone to school and returns home alone. Furthermore, she always wears a faded blue dress that is not ironed properly. The only time she speaks is when she is asked about the number of dresses she owns by Peggy and the other girls.

'A hundred' is what Wanda tells them, leading them to make fun of her behind her back. No one trusts Wanda, for she hails from a poor background. Everyone, including Maddie and Peggy, believes that Wanda can't have a hundred dresses hanging up in the closet. So, when she goes away, they break into peals of laughter.

Even though it is Peggy who thought up this game, she is not really cruel. As a matter of fact, she protects young children from bullies. Also, she cries if she sees any animal mistreated. Maddie, however, is bothered by the dresses game as she too being poor wears hand-me-down clothes. The only difference between Wanda and her is that unlike Wanda, she does not live in Boggins Heights or have a funny name.

Maddie eventually wants to tell Peggy to stop asking Wanda how many clothes she has, but thinks better of it, fearing she might become the next target of Peggy and the girls. She doesn’t want to break her friendship with Peggy, and she feels that Peggy could not possibly be wrong given she is liked by many girls.

It is only while thinking of Wanda and the hundred dresses, does Maggie come to think of the drawing and colouring contest. As Peggy happens to be the best drawer, she feels Peggy would bag the prize.

Peggy appears confident of winning the prize. But when both enter the room where the designs are showcased, they are in for a shock. Even the other students gasp upon seeing close to a hundred intriguing designs. Miss Mason then tells them that while Jack Beggles had won for the boys, it was Wenda Petronski who had drawn the hundred beautiful designs, thereby winning for the girls. Just one of her drawings, nevertheless, was worthy of winning. Peggy and Maddie then realise that it was these dresses Wanda had been talking about the whole time.
