Class 10 Chapter 4 - From the Diary of Anne Frank Summary in Hindi and English

‘From the Diary of Anne Frank;' is an excerpt from the book 'The Diary of a Young Girl'. The lesson gives an insight into the early life of Anne Frank, especially the time she spent in high school and throws light on the kind of relationship she shared with her father, her grandmother, and two teachers. The lesson can be divided into two parts. While the first part mainly deals with Anne and her thoughts about why she decided to keep a diary, the second part is in actuality a diary entry.

In the first part, the reader learns that Anne Frank has just started maintaining a diary. Unlike many who maintain a diary just to record their everyday activities, Anne keeps a diary because she has no true friend. Although she feels that none would be interested in knowing the thoughts of a girl of her age, she wants to rid herself of the thoughts that occupy her mind. For her, the diary is only going to be a patient companion who would listen to her musings and rambles without saying anything in return. 

पहले भाग में, पाठक पता है कि ऐनी फ्रैंक ने अभी-अभी एक डायरी/दैनिक जीवन की पुस्तिका बनाए रखना शुरू की है। कई लोग अपनी रोज़मर्रा की गतिविधियों को दर्ज़ करने के लिए डायरी रखते है, लेकिन ऐनी एक डायरी इसलिये रखती है क्योंकि उसका कोई सच्चा दोस्त नहीं है। हालांकि उसे लगता है कि किसी को भी उसके उम्र की लड़की के विचारों को जानने में दिलचस्पी नहीं होगी, फिर भी वह अपने आप को उन विचारों से छुटकारा दिलाना चाहती है जो उसके दिमाग पर कब्जा कर लेते हैं। उसके लिए, केवल डायरी ही एक सहनशील साथी होने जा रही है जो बदले में कुछ भी कहे बिना उसके चिंतन और सैर को सुनेगी।

Part of the reason why Anne wants to let the reader know about her before she even starts addressing her thoughts to the diary is that she feels nobody would understand her confabulations with the diary. She says that despite having a sister, loving parents, and close to thirty people she could call friends, there is no one close to her. The fact that she finds it difficult to confide in people makes her start penning down her thoughts in the diary that she names Kitty. 

डायरी में अपने विचारों को संबोधित करना शुरू करने से पहले ऐनी पाठक को उसके बारे में बताना चाहती है, इसका एक कारण यह है कि उसे लगता है कि कोई भी डायरी के साथ उसकी बातचीत को नहीं समझ पायेगा। वह कहती है कि एक बहन, प्यार करने वाले माता-पिता और तीस के करीब लोग जिन्हे वह दोस्त बुला सकती थी, होने के बावजूद भी उसके करीब कोई नहीं है। हकिकत यह है कि उसे लोगों पर विश्वास करना मुश्किल लगता है, जिसके कारन वह अपने विचारों को उस डायरी/दैनिक जीवन की पुस्तिका में लिखना शुरू कर देती है जिसे वह किट्टी का नाम देती है।

Calling her father the most adorable father in the world, Anne says that she lived with her family in Frankfurt, Germany until the age of four. Her father then emigrated to Holland and her mother Edith Hollander Frank soon relocated. However, she and her sister Margot were sent to their grandmother’s. Later that year Margot moved to Holland and the next year Anne too relocated. 

अपने पिता को दुनिया का सबसे प्यारा पिता बताते हुए ऐनी कहती हैं कि वह अपने परिवार के साथ जर्मनी के फ्रैंकफर्ट में चार साल की उम्र तक रही। उसके पिता फिर हॉलैंड चले गए और ऐनी की मां ईडिथ होलैंडर फ्रैंक जल्द ही स्थानांतरित हो गई। हालांकि, उसे और उसकी बहन मार्गोट को उनकी दादी के पास भेज दिया गया था। बाद में उस वर्ष मार्गोट हॉलैंड चली गई और अगले साल ऐनी भी स्थानांतरित हो गई।

Some people who played special roles in her life include Mrs Kuperus, her teacher and the headmistress of the school she went to, and her grandmother. Her love for Mrs Kuperus was evident as they both had tears in their eyes when Anne had to leave the school after completing the sixth grade. Talking of her grandmother, Anne says that she loved her even after she had passed away and she did not even celebrate her birthday when she was ill before it. Nonetheless, it was on June 20, 1942, when Anne began addressing Kitty in her diary.

In the extract that’s given, Anne talks about the school days and the fun she had had then. She used to be a chatterbox and was asked by Maths teacher Mr. Keesing to write an essay on the subject of ‘A Chatterbox’ several times. She says that teachers were highly predictable and also credits them for the good performance of the students. 

दिए गए भाग/सार में, ऐनी स्कूल के दिनों और उस समय की मस्ती के बारे में बात करती है। वह एक गप्पी/बातूनी हुआ करती थी और गणित के शिक्षक मिस्टर कीसिंग ने उसे कई बार 'एक गप्पी' विषय पर निबंध लिखने के लिए कहा था। वह कहती हैं कि शिक्षक अत्यधिक पूर्वानुमेयी/स्थिर प्रकृति के थे और छात्रों के अच्छे प्रदर्शन के लिए उन्हें श्रेय भी देती हैं। 

The multiple essay writing episodes that she underwent are what she writes in detail in this entry. In each of those essays, she came up with something witty, and also states that she can't stop talking because her being talkative was genetic and little could be done to correct it. She also wrote a poem. She concludes the day's entry by saying that Mr Keesing eventually allowed her to talk and had since then she been cracking jokes for everyone.

Poem: Amanda

‘Amanda’ is a short poem by Robin Klein that deals with Amanda’s mother’s constant pieces of irritating advice and Amanda’s imaginations. While the first, third, fifth, and seventh stanzas are simply statements made by Amanda’s mother; the second, fourth and sixth ones are Amanda’s wild imaginations. All the statements made by the mother end with the word ‘Amanda’. 

'अमेंडा' रॉबिन क्लेन द्वारा लिखित एक छोटी सी कविता है जो अमेंडा की मां की लगातार परेशान करने वाली सलाह और अमेंडा की कल्पनाओं से संबंधित है। इसमें पहला, तीसरा, पाँचवाँ और सातवाँ छंद अमेंडा की माँ द्वारा दिए गए बयान हैं; जबकि दूसरी, चौथी और छठी अमेंडा की अनियंत्रित/आनन्ददायक कल्पनाएँ हैं। मां के द्वारा बोले गए सभी कथन ‘अमेंडा’ शब्द के साथ समाप्त होते हैं।

Amanda is a frustrated teenage girl who wants to live a life away from her parents. Her mother keeps nagging her and even scolds her for doing something small like hunching the back. Amanda, on the other hand, listens to her mother. She doesn’t, however, respond. In the second stanza, she imagines herself to be a mermaid drifting in an inactive sea of emeralds. In the fourth stanza, she makes it evident that she would rather be an orphan roaming freely than be a daughter with parents who keep nagging. 

अमेंडा एक निराश किशोरी लड़की है जो अपने माता-पिता से दूर जीवन जीना चाहती है। उसकी मां उसे परेशान करती रहती है और यहां तक कि उसे पीठ थपथपाने जैसा कुछ छोटा करने के लिए भी डाँटती है। दूसरी ओर अमेंडा अपनी मां की बात सुनती है। फिर भी, वह प्रतिक्रिया नहीं देती है। जबकि दूसरे छंद में, वह खुद को एक जलपरी/मत्स्यांगना के रूप में कल्पना करती है जो पन्ना के एक निष्क्रिय समुद्र में बहती है। चौथे छंद में वह यह स्पष्ट करती है कि वह ऐसे माता-पिता जो परेशान करते रहते है उसकी एक बेटी होने के बजाय स्वतंत्र रूप से घूमने वाली एक अनाथ होना पसंद करेगी।

Her mother, on the other hand, asks Amanda to finish her homework, tidy the room, and clean the shoes. Reminding her she has acne, she tells her not to eat chocolate and also asks her to look at her while speaking. Furthermore, she tells Amanda not to sulk. But, Amanda hopes to be the fairy tale character Rapunzel who lives in tranquillity without caring for anything but her hair.
