'The Hack Driver' by American novelist Sinclair Lewis tells the story of a lawyer. The lawyer, who gets a job as an assistant in a reputed firm soon after he graduates, doesn't like his job of summoning people. There were some extremely bad situations that he had to encounter.
अमेरिकी उपन्यासकार सिनक्लेयर लुईस की 'द हैक ड्राइवर' एक वकील की कहानी कहती है। वकील, जिसे स्नातक होने के तुरंत बाद एक प्रतिष्ठित फर्म में सहायक के रूप में नौकरी मिल जाती है, लोगों को बुलाने का उसका काम पसंद नहीं आता है। कुछ बेहद खराब परिस्थितियां थीं जिनका उन्हें सामना करना पड़ा।
It so happened that one fine day, he was asked to summon one Mr Oliver Lutkins. This person happened to be a witness in a high-profile case. The lawyer had to now go to the village where Mr Lutkins lives. Upon arriving at the village, he realised that it was lifeless and weary, but there was a hack driver who appeared happy. This guy immediately learnt that the lawyer had come to the village with the sole business of serving summons to Mr Lutkins.
ऐसा हुआ कि एक दिन, उसे एक मिस्टर ओलिवर लुटकिंस को बुलाने के लिए कहा गया। यह शख्स एक हाई-प्रोफाइल मामले में गवाह बना था। वकील को अब उस गाँव जाना था जहाँ श्रीमान लुटकिंस रहते हैं। गांव में पहुंचने पर उन्होंने महसूस किया कि यह बेजान और थका हुआ है, लेकिन एक हैक ड्राइवर था जो खुश दिखाई दे रहा था। इस आदमी को तुरंत पता चला कि वकील श्रीमान लुटकिंस को सम्मन देने के एकमात्र व्यवसाय के साथ गाँव आया था।
The lawyer, who is eagerly looking forward to meeting Lutkins, takes the hack, but he gets manipulated and is made to visit several places. The poor lawyer, without realising that he is being tricked, goes and asks about Lutkins whereabouts from everyone.

He first gets told that he is shaving and then someone says he is playing in the pool. In the pool, the lawyer is told that he has gone out to buy cigarettes. In the afternoon, Bill, the hack driver, wants to know if he would like to have the food cooked by his wife. He tells him that it would be less costly. They end up lunching at the beautiful Wade’s hill.

The lawyer now is of the opinion that Bill is a nice and generous person. But when they go to Lutkin's mother's place, they only learn how terrible the lady is. And he makes a return without finding Lutkins. The very next day, the lawyer is sent again to the place with a colleague who knows how Lutkins looks. On reaching the station, the lawyer spots Bill and tells his colleague that he is a helpful person. But then he is told that Bill is none other than Olver Lutkins!
