The chapter ‘Packing’ is an extract from the author Jerome K Jerome’s book entitled ‘Three Men on a Boat.’ The story begins with the author agreeing to pack for a journey he and his friends are planning to undertake. The author says he prides himself on his packing, for it happens to be one of the few things that he can do better than any other person living. Nevertheless, when he tells his friends, George and Harris, that he is willing to pack, he finds them immediately agreeing to his proposal.

The author says that this wasn't what he’d expected. He had actually meant to boss the job and see to it that Harris and George did all the trivial things. Jerome then stresses that there is nothing that irritates him more than people sitting and doing nothing while he is working. But what Jerome does like to do is boss around and superintend, telling others what needs to be done.

On that day though, the author did not say anything to his friends but began packing. But when he had done with the bag and strapped it, Harris asked whether he was going to put the boots in. He realised after that he had forgotten them. The author is not surprised, however, that Harris waited for the bag to be shut to remind him of the shoes. Also, this is the time when George lets out a senseless laugh, seemingly to irritate Jerome.

When the author had opened the bag and packed the boots, he came upon a horrible idea, the idea of whether or not he had put in his toothbrush, a thing that haunted him whenever he was travelling. The author says that every time he would wake up in cold perspiration, thinking that he had not packed the toothbrush, he would pack it before using it and then unpack the bag to get it again. But soon after he’d forget it and end up carrying it to the railway station in his pocket-handkerchief.

The author says that that time while looking for his toothbrush, he unpacked everything and everything returned to a state the world must have been before it was created. He did find George's and Harris's toothbrush many times but couldn't find his. He later ended up finding it inside a boot and repacked once more. The packing from his end was finished at 10:05 PM. George and Harris agreed to do the hampers after.

George agreed, knowing well that over time, things would start getting interesting. He began with the breaking of a cup. Harris then packed strawberry jam on top of a tomato and squashed it. George trod on butter. They became nervous and excited even as Jerome watched on. They stepped on things, couldn’t find them when they wanted, and they ended up packing the pies at the bottom, foolishly placing heavy things on top.

The funniest part though was their searching for butter across the place without realising that and Harris had sat on it and that it had stuck to him. They finally found it and packed it in the teapot.

It was the dog’s turn then to mess. Montmorency’s ambition, Jerome says, is to be sworn at. Also, if he doesn’t make people mad, he feels his day has been wasted. Therefore, Montmorency came and sat on things exactly when they were about to be packed. He also laboured, thinking that whenever Harris and George reached out their hand for anything, it was his damp nose. He had even thought lemons were rats!

The packing was over at 12.50, and he and Harris went to bed. They decided on waking up at 6:20 after a row. Also, they kept a bath next to George so he may tumble into it on getting up, thus waking them up.
