‘If I Were You’ is a hilarious play written by Douglas Play. It deals with only two characters - one Mr Gerrard - who happens to be a theatre artist and the other an intruder, who wants to steal Mr Gerrard’s identity by killing him.

The intruder enters Gerrard's secluded cottage and
as soon as he enters, he tries his best to gather as much information as
possible from Gerrard. Gerrard, on the other hand, doesn't panic on seeing the
intruder. But he immediately tries to figure what can be done.

The intruder, who holds a gun, tries to dominate. He
asks Gerrard to sit in a position and asks him whether he lives there alone. He
also tells Gerrard to keep all his personal stories with him. His interest is
only in figuring Gerrard’s mannerism and his way of talking so he may pretend
to be him after having killed Gerrard and stolen his identity.

But Gerrard does his best to avoid the questions.
And this he does humorously. When asked whether he runs a car, Gerrard answers
in the negative and concedes that he possesses a car after the intruder says he
has seen him drive a car. He also tells the intruder that the only people that
he does interact with are the baker, the greengrocer, and the milkman.

Gerrard quite cleverly puts some questions to the
intruder and the intruder foolishly answers them. Gerrard learns that the
intruder is on the run after having killed a cop. He immediately cooks up a
story and tells the intruder that taking on his identity would serve no purpose
for he too is evading arrest and that stealing his identity would also mean he
would be hanged.
गेरार्ड काफी चतुराई से घुसपैठिए को कुछ सवाल पूछता है और घुसपैठिया मूर्खतापूर्वक उनका जवाब देता है। गेरार्ड को पता चलता है कि घुसपैठिया एक पुलिस वाले को मारने के बाद भाग रहा है। वह तुरंत एक कहानी बनाता है और घुसपैठिए को बताता है कि उसकी पहचान लेने से कोई उद्देश्य नहीं होगा क्योंकि वह भी गिरफ्तारी से बच रहा है और उसकी पहचान चुराने का मतलब यह भी होगा कि उसे फांसी दे दी जाएगी।
Gerrard lies, telling the intruder that he often changes places and never meets tradespeople only because of the crime he is involved in and that the very night he is expecting the police to land on his doorstep. He also says that his outfit is false. And when the intruder believes him, Gerrard uses the opportunity to take him to a cupboard’s door saying that it is the door out of the place. He opens it, pushes the intruder, and grabs his gun. He then goes about doing his tasks.
