Quality
Mr. Gessler, a German shoemaker, is the protagonist of this story. He has known the author since he was a child when the shoemaker used to make the author's father's boots. In his shop, the shoemaker used to live with his older brother. His shop was a small off-the-beaten-path shop in a fashionable part of London. The shop, however, was a little different from the others. The shop had no signage other than the name written on it and a few pairs of boots in the window.

The shoemaker's slippers would tip tap as he descended the stairs, and a guttural sound would come from upstairs. Mr. Gessler appeared unprofessional. He'd be willing to take a risk. In his leather apron, he would stand slightly bent towards the customer, his shirt sleeves turned back. He'd blink as if he'd just awoken from a nightmare about boots. After that, the author would place his order, and the shoemaker would deliver a piece of leather.

The shoemaker, with his German accent, would admire the piece, as would the author. The shoemaker would then ask the author when he wanted his order, and he would respond as soon as he could. The shoemaker would keep the date as the following fortnight, but if the author was his elder brother, he would say that he would ask his brother and then inform him. They'd then say their goodbyes, and the shoemaker would return to his dream of making boots.

He explained that some boots were defective from the start, and if those boots were damaged beyond repair, he would replace them.

The shoemaker slammed
the big corporations, claiming that their advertisements were driving away from
his customers. He talked about his difficulties at the time. Because he felt
bad for the shoemaker, the author ordered several pairs of boots, which lasted
him two years due to their high quality. When he returned to Mr. Gessler's
store after a few months, he learned that Mr. Gessler's elder brother had died.
Again, out of sadness, the author placed a large order for many pairs. After
that, the author spent more than a year in another country. When he returned,
he went to Mr. Gessler's store and ordered a variety of boots.

Following receipt of his orders, the author decided to pay a visit to Mr. Gessler and express his gratitude for his service. The name of the shoemaker, however, was not written on the shop when he arrived. Mr. Gessler had died of starvation, he soon learned from the new owner. Mr. Gessler lost all of his customers, according to the owner, because of his slow speed and the fact that he never advertised. Mr. Gessler would never stop working on boots, and he never spent on himself. Mr. Gessler, he said, had the best leather and made good boots. With a heavy heart, the author added that Mr. Gessler made good boots.

season. During the winter, trees provide no shade, allowing people to bask in
the sun. Fruits such as apples and pears are available for consumption. Even
when trees are cut down, they are still useful.
