Fair Play

Jumman Sheikh and Algu Chowdhury were good friends. They shared a strong bond of friendship. Jumman had an old aunt who had transferred her property to him on the understanding that she would be looked after by Jumman in her old age. Things went accordingly for a couple of years. However, after a few years, Jumman and his wife grew indifferent towards the old lady. She used to swallow the insults often, but her patience had its limits. These insults made her demand a separate kitchen to which Jumman and his wife disagreed. The selfish and unkind act of Jumman and his wife made her weary. She decided to take her case to the village Panchayat.

जुम्मन शेख और अल्गू चौधरी अच्छे दोस्त थे। उन्होंने दोस्ती का एक मजबूत बंधन साझा किया। जुम्मन की एक बूढ़ी चाची थी जिसने अपनी संपत्ति को इस समझ पर उसे हस्तांतरित कर दिया था कि उसकी देखभाल जुम्मन द्वारा बुढ़ापे में की जाएगी। चीजें कुछ वर्षों के लिए तदनुसार चलती रही। हालांकि, कुछ वर्षों के बाद, जुम्मन और उसकी पत्नी बूढ़ी औरत के प्रति उदासीन हो गए। वह अक्सर अपमान को निगल लेती थी, लेकिन उसके धैर्य की अपनी सीमाएं थीं। इन अपमानों के चलते उन्होंने  एक अलग रसोई घर की मांग की, जिससे जुम्मन और उसकी पत्नी असहमत थे।जुम्मन और उसकी पत्नी के स्वार्थी और निर्दयी कृत्य ने उसे थका दिया। उसने अपना पक्ष ग्राम पंचायत में ले जाने का निर्णय लिया।

To seek to support the old lady asked Algu Chowdhury who was Jumman’s best friend for help. When the Panchayat was held, the old lady made Algu Chowdhury the head panch. Algu cross-examined Jumman and passed the decision in favour of Jumman’s aunt. He was made to pay the allowance that she had demanded. It was the duty of the panch to do justice for the panch knew neither friends nor enemy.

बूढ़ी महिला का समर्थन करने के लिए, अल्गू चौधरी से पूछा जो मदद के लिए जुम्मन का सबसे अच्छा दोस्त था। पंचायत हुई तो वृद्धा ने अलगू चौधरी को प्रधान पंच बना दिया। अल्गू ने जुम्मन की जिरह की और जुम्मन की चाची के पक्ष में फैसला सुनाया। उसे वह भत्ता देने के लिए कहा गया था जो उसने मांग की थी। पंच का कर्तव्य था कि वह न्याय करे क्योंकि पंच न तो मित्रों को जानता था और न ही शत्रु।

After this incident, Jumman and Algu no longer remained friends. In fact, Jumman started looking for opportunities to take revenge on Algu. Days passed and Algu’s financial situation weakened. In order to get hold of some money, he sold a pair of his bullocks to Samjhu Sahu. Samjhu Sahu was the cart driver of the village and the bullocks were sold to him on such terms that Sahu would pay the price of the bullock’s in a month’s time. Unfortunately, the bullock died within a month and Samjhu Sahu refused to pay the amount to Algu Chowdhury.

इस घटना के बाद जुम्मन और अल्गू अब दोस्त नहीं रहे। दरअसल, जुम्मन ने एल्गू से बदला लेने के लिए मौके तलाशने शुरू कर दिए। दिन बीत गए और अल्गू की वित्तीय स्थिति कमजोर हो गई। कुछ पैसे पकड़ने के लिए उसने अपने बैलों का जोड़ा सांझू साहू को बेच दिया। सांझू साहू गांव का गाड़ी चालक था और बैलों को उसे इस तरह की शर्तों पर बेचा जाता था कि साहू एक महीने के समय में बैलों की कीमत चुका देता था। दुर्भाग्य से, बैल एक महीने के भीतर मर गया और समझू साहू ने अल्गू चौधरी को राशि का भुगतान करने से इनकार कर दिया। 

Algu then decided to refer to the Village Panchayat. Sahu was aware of the enmity between Algu and Jumman. So, this time Sahu chose Jumman as the ‘head panch’. Jumman realizing his responsibility as the ‘head panch’ passed the judgement in favour of Algu. Jumman understood that ‘God lives in the panch’. And no one should deviate from the path of justice. 

इसके बाद अल्गू ने ग्राम पंचायत को संदर्भित करने का फैसला किया। साहू को अलगू और जुम्मन के बीच दुश्मनी की जानकारी थी। इसलिए, इस बार साहू ने जुम्मन को 'हेड पंच' के रूप में चुना। जुम्मन ने 'प्रमुख पंच' के रूप में अपनी जिम्मेदारी का एहसास करते हुए अल्गू के पक्ष में फैसला सुनाया। जुम्मन समझ गया कि 'पंच में भगवान रहते हैं'। और किसी को भी न्याय के मार्ग से विचलित नहीं होना चाहिए।
