A Different Kind of School

“A different kind of school” is written by E.V. Lucas. This story is about Miss Beam’s School where the students were taught how to sympathise with the help of each other and be a better citizen. The writer had heard a lot about it, so he had gone to visit the school.

"अ डिफ्रेंट काइंड ऑफ़  स्कूल" ई.वी. लुकास द्वारा लिखा गया है। यह कहानी मिस बीम  की स्कूल की है जहां छात्रों को सिखाया गया था कि कैसे एक-दूसरे की मदद से सहानुभूति रखें और एक बेहतर नागरिक बनें। लेखक ने इसके बारे में बहुत कुछ सुना था, इसलिए वह स्कूल का दौरा करने गया था।

When he entered school, he saw a girl whose eyes were covered with a bandage. A little boy was leading her carefully between the flower-beds. Then, the author came to Miss Beam and asked her some questions about teaching methodologies. She replied that her teaching methods were simple. However, there was one thing different that was- the aim of the school. She said, “The real aim of this school is not so much to teach thought as to teach thoughtfulness and kindness to others”. She requested the author to look out of the window and asked the author what he had seen. The author said, “I see there are many happy children playing in the ground, but they are not so healthy. When I entered school, I saw one girl with her eyes bandaged, but now, I see two more girls with their eyes bandaged in the garden.

जब उन्होंने स्कूल में प्रवेश किया, तो उन्होंने एक लड़की को देखा, जिसकी आंखें एक पट्टी से ढकी हुई थीं। एक छोटा लड़का उसे फूलों के बिस्तरों के बीच सावधानी से ले जा रहा था। फिर, लेखक मिस बीम के पास आया और उससे शिक्षण पद्धतियों के बारे में कुछ प्रश्न पूछे। उसने जवाब दिया कि उसके शिक्षण के तरीके सरल थे। हालांकि, एक बात अलग थी कि वह थी- स्कूल का उद्देश्य। उन्होंने कहा, "इस स्कूल का वास्तविक उद्देश्य इतना नहीं है कि विचारों को सिखाया जाए  जितना कि वे दूसरों को विचारशीलता और दयालुता सिखाएं। उसने लेखक से खिड़की से बाहर देखने का अनुरोध किया और लेखक से पूछा कि उसने क्या देखा था। लेखक ने कहा, "मैं देखता हूं कि मैदान में कई खुश बच्चे खेल रहे हैं, लेकिन वे इतने स्वस्थ नहीं हैं। जब मैंने स्कूल में प्रवेश किया, तो मैंने एक लड़की को अपनी आंखों पर पट्टी बांधे हुए देखा, लेकिन अब, मैं बगीचे में अपनी आंखों की पट्टी के साथ दो और लड़कियों को देखता हूं।

“No, they are not really lame or blind.” Miss Beam laughed and said, “It is just their lame/blind day. It is an important part of our teaching system. We make our children understand what a misfortune really is by making them lame, blind, dumb, deaf and injured on a particular day and others are told to help them so that they can also learn how to help those who are in misfortune.” This was like a game for children in the school that everyone had to play.

"नहीं, वे वास्तव में लंगड़े या अंधे नहीं हैं। मिस बीम ने हंसते हुए कहा, "यह सिर्फ उनका लंगड़ा / अंधा दिन है। यह हमारी शिक्षण प्रणाली का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है। हम अपने बच्चों को यह समझाते हैं कि वास्तव में एक दुर्भाग्य क्या है, उन्हें किसी विशेष दिन पर लंगड़ा, अंधा, गूंगा, बहरा और घायल बनाकर और दूसरों को उनकी मदद करने के लिए कहा जाता है ताकि वे उन लोगों की मदद करना सीख सकें जो दुर्भाग्य में हैं। यह स्कूल में बच्चों के लिए एक खेल की तरह था जिसे हर किसी को खेलना था।

“The blind day is, of course, tough, but students share that the dumb day is tougher than the blind day. We can’t bandage students’ mouths, so their will-power is highly required” she added.

She led the author to a bandaged girl and left him with her for some time. The author asked a few questions- Don’t you ever peep? Are your helpers kind to you? etc. and both went for a short walk. They had a good conversation during the walk. He enjoyed the pleasure of describing things and people. Also, he found that he had become ten times more thoughtful than before. 

उसने लेखक को एक पट्टीबंद लड़की के पास ले गई और उसे कुछ समय के लिए उसके साथ छोड़ दिया। लेखक ने कुछ सवाल पूछे- क्या आप कभी झाँकते नहीं हैं? क्या आपके सहायक आपके लिए दयालु हैं? आदि और दोनों थोड़ी देर टहलने के लिए चले गए। पैदल चलने के दौरान उनकी अच्छी बातचीत हुई।  लेखक चीजों और लोगों का वर्णन करने की खुशी का आनंद लेता था। इसके अलावा, उन्होंने पाया कि वह पहले की तुलना में दस गुना अधिक विचारशील हो गए थे।

Poem: All But Blind

The poem “All but blind” is written by Walter de la Mare. This poem is about animals that are considered to be blind by humans. The poet talks first about the four-clawed Mole. It seems that the Mole has a limited ability because it can’t see, but it is capable enough to sustain itself by eating worms that it ‘gropes’ for in its ‘chambered hole’.

कविता " आल बट ब्लाइंड " वाल्टर डे ला मारे द्वारा लिखा गया है। यह कविता उन जानवरों के बारे में है जिन्हें मनुष्य अंधा मानते हैं। कवि पहले चार पंजे वाले मोल के बारे में बात करता है। ऐसा लगता है कि मोल में एक सीमित क्षमता है क्योंकि यह नहीं देख सकता है, लेकिन यह कीड़े खाने से खुद को बनाए रखने में सक्षम है जो इसे अपने 'चेम्बर्ड होल' में 'ग्रोप्स' करता है।

Next, the poet talks about another animal ‘Bat’ that can also not see well according to humans. Yet, it is able to navigate flawlessly in the ‘evening sky’ and fly freely without any difficulty.

इसके बाद, कवि एक और जानवर 'चमगादड़' के बारे में बात करता है जो मनुष्यों के अनुसार अच्छी तरह से नहीं देख सकता है। फिर भी, यह 'शाम के आकाश' में निर्दोष रूप से नेविगेट करने और बिना किसी कठिनाई के स्वतंत्र रूप से उड़ान भरने में सक्षम है।

Then, the poet talks about the Barn Owl. We consider that it, too, can’t see as we do. However, it also manages to get along very well. On the contrary, the Mole, Bat and Owl have more acute senses than the gift of sight we have.

फिर, कवि बार्न उल्लू के बारे में बात करता है। हम मानते हैं कि यह भी, जैसा हम करते हैं, वैसा नहीं देख सकते हैं। हालांकि, यह बहुत अच्छी तरह से साथ पाने का प्रबंधन भी करता है। इसके विपरीत, मोल, चमगादड़ और उल्लू में हमारे पास दृष्टि के उपहार की तुलना में अधिक तीव्र इंद्रियां हैं।

In the end, the poet says that the meaning of ‘sight’ is different for people/creatures. As we think that the Mole, Bat and Owl are blind because they can’t see like us. So, the others might also think that we are blinds as we can’t see like them. 

अंत में, कवि कहता है कि 'दृष्टि' का अर्थ लोगों / प्राणियों के लिए अलग है। जैसा कि हम सोचते हैं कि मोल, बैट और उल्लू अंधे हैं क्योंकि वे हमारी तरह नहीं देख सकते हैं। इसलिए, अन्य लोग यह भी सोच सकते हैं कि हम अंधे हैं क्योंकि हम उनकी तरह नहीं देख सकते हैं।

Poem: Where Do All Teachers Go?

The poem “Where do all the teachers go?” is written by Peter Dixon. In this poem, the child poet wonders if his teachers are ordinary people. Do they live like ordinary or common people? He wonders where they go after school. Do they live in ordinary houses and do household chores like washing and cleaning?

कविता "वेयर डू आल टीचर्स गो?" पीटर डिक्सन द्वारा लिखा गया है। इस कविता में बाल कवि को आश्चर्य होता है कि क्या उसके शिक्षक साधारण लोग हैं। क्या वे आम लोगों की तरह रहते हैं? वह सोचता है कि वे स्कूल के बाद कहां जाते हैं। क्या वे साधारण घरों में रहते हैं और घर के काम जैसे धोते और सफाई करते हैं?

He also  wants to know if they wear pyjamas, watch TV and pick their noses. Do they have parents, were they children, and as bad as other children are? How wonders if they also made spelling mistakes and were punished for pinching the chocolate flakes. They look perfect. Perhaps, they never lost their hymn books and scribbled on the desktops. He wants to follow one of his teachers after school and know all these things. 

वह यह भी जानना चाहता है कि क्या वे पायजामा पहनते हैं, टीवी देखते हैं और अपनी नाक चुनते हैं। क्या उनके माता-पिता हैं, क्या वे बच्चे थे, और अन्य बच्चों के रूप में बुरे हैं? उसे आश्चर्य है कि अगर वे भी वर्तनी गलतियाँ की और चॉकलेट के गुच्छे चुटकी के लिए दंडित किया गया था। वे एकदम सही लग रहे हैं। शायद, उन्होंने अपनी भजन पुस्तकों को कभी नहीं खोया और डेस्कटॉप पर लिखा। वह स्कूल के बाद अपने एक शिक्षक का अनुसरण करना चाहता है और इन सभी चीजों को जानना चाहता है।
