Class 6 Chapter 5 - Tansen Summary in Hindi and English

The story is about the greatest musician that our country has ever known. Tansen. Tansen lived with his mother and his father Mukandan Misra in Behat, near Gwalior. Tansen was their only and naughty child. He would run away into the forest to play and in due course learnt to imitate the voice of birds and animals.

कहानी हमारे देश में जाने गए सबसे महान संगीतकार के बारे में है। तानसेन । तानसेन ग्वालियर के पास बेहट में अपनी मां और पिता मुकंदन मिश्रा के साथ रहते थे। तानसेन उनकी एकमात्र और शरारती संतान थी। वह खेलने के लिए जंगल में भाग जाता था और इसी दौरान पक्षियों और जानवरों की आवाज की नकल करना सीख गया था।

Tansen’s talent was recognized by Swami Haridas. Once Swami Haridas was travelling with his disciples when they heard the roar of a tiger in the forest. Scared by the sound his disciples scattered everywhere. But Haridas asked his disciple to look for the tiger that found Tansen instead who was into this mischief. Haridas then went on to ask Tansen’s parents to allow him to train such a talented boy. At the tender age of ten, Tansen joined Swami Haridas and learnt music under his guidance. Tansen lived with Swami Haridas for eleven years and became a great singer. His father’s dying wish was that Tansen should visit Mohammad Ghaus, of whom Mukandan Misra was a devotee. He too became the devotee of Mohammad Ghaus.

तानसेन की प्रतिभा को स्वामी हरिदास ने पहचाना। एक बार स्वामी हरिदास अपने शिष्यों के साथ यात्रा कर रहे थे, जब उन्होंने जंगल में बाघ की दहाड़ सुनी। आवाज से डरकर उनके शिष्य हर जगह बिखर गए। लेकिन हरिदास ने अपने शिष्य से उस बाघ की तलाश करने के लिए कहा जिनको इसके बजाय तानसेन मिला था, जो अपने शरारत में था। इसके बाद हरिदास तानसेन के माता-पिता से पूछने गए कि वह उन्हें इस  प्रतिभाशाली लड़के को प्रशिक्षित करने की अनुमति दें। दस वर्ष की अल्पायु में तानसेन स्वामी हरिदास से जुड़ गए और उनके मार्गदर्शन में संगीत की शिक्षा ली। तानसेन ग्यारह साल तक स्वामी हरिदास के साथ रहे और एक महान गायक बन गए। उनके पिता की अन्तिम इच्छा थी कि तानसेन को मोहम्मद गौस के दर्शन करने जाए, जिनके मुकंदन मिश्रा एक भक्त थे। तानसेन भी मोहम्मद गौस का भक्त बन गया।

While he lived with Mohammad Ghaus, Tansen visited the court of Rani Mrignaini who herself was a great musician. He married Hussaini whom he met in Rani Mrignaini’s court and had five musical children.

जब वह मोहम्मद गौस के साथ रहते थे, तब तानसेन ने रानी मृगनायनी के दरबार का दौरा किया जो खुद एक महान संगीतकार थी। उन्होंने हुसैनी से शादी की, जिनसे वह रानी मृगैनी के दरबार में मिले थे और उनके पांच संगीत बच्चे थे।

By this time Tansen had become quite famous. He used to sing at emperor Akbar’s court who was so impressed with Tansen that he insisted that Tansen should join Akbar’s court. Tansn joined Akbar’s court in 1556 and became his favourite musician. Akbar was so fond of Tansen that he would often call him to play at his court irrespective of day or night. Akbar would casually visit his home just to see and hear him practice music. He would often shower him with presents. This made other courtiers jealous of Tansen. They wanted his ruin so that they could be at rest.

इस समय तक तानसेन काफी प्रसिद्ध हो चुके थे। वह बादशाह अकबर के दरबार में गाते थे जो तानसेन से इतना प्रभावित थे कि उन्होंने जोर देकर कहा कि तानसेन को अकबर के दरबार में शामिल होना चाहिए। तान्सन 1556 में अकबर के दरबार में शामिल हो गए और उनके पसंदीदा संगीतकार बन गए। अकबर को तानसेन से इतना लगाव था कि वह अक्सर उसे दिन या रात की परवाह किए बिना अपने दरबार में बजाने के लिए बुलाते थे। अकबर लापरवाही से तानसेन के घर पर सिर्फ उसके संगीत अभ्यास देखने और सुनने के लिए जाते थे। वह अक्सर उसे उपहार के साथ स्नान करता था। इससे अन्य दरबारियों को तानसेन से ईर्ष्या होने लगी। वे उसकी बर्बादी चाहते थे ताकि वे आराम कर सकें।

One of the courtiers, Shaukat Mian, made a plan to ruin Tansen. He said that if Tansen would sing Raga Deepak he would die because if a singer sings Raga Deepak the air would become so hot and the singer would burn himself into ashes. The courtiers went to Akbar’s court and demanded Tansen to prove that he is the greatest musician by singing Raga Deepak. Akbar thus requested Tansen to prove himself by doing so. Tansen was aware that he would burn himself to death if he sang Raga Deepak, but he was so afraid that he could not disobey the emperor. He asked for time to prepare Raga Deepak so that he could get some idea to save himself.

एक दरबारी शौकत मियां ने तानसेन को बर्बाद करने की योजना बनाई। उन्होंने कहा कि अगर तानसेन राग दीपक को गाता है तो वह मर जाएगा क्योंकि अगर कोई गायक राग दीपक गाता है तो हवा इतनी गर्म हो जाएगी कि गायक खुद को राख में जला देगा। दरबारियों ने अकबर के दरबार में जाकर तानसेन से राग दीपक गाकर यह साबित करने की मांग की कि वह सबसे महान संगीतकार हैं। अकबर ने इस प्रकार तानसेन से ऐसा करके खुद को साबित करने का अनुरोध किया। तानसेन को पता था कि अगर वह राग दीपक गाता है तो वह खुद को जला देगा, लेकिन वह इतना डर गया था कि वह सम्राट की अवज्ञा नहीं कर सका। उन्होंने राग दीपक को तैयार करने के लिए समय मांगा ताकि उन्हें खुद को बचाने के लिए कुछ आइडिया मिल सके।

While discussing with his wife, he realized that if someone sings Raga Megh at the same time he sings Raga Deepak he could save his life. Since Raga Megha brings rain. If it would rain then he would not burn himself. He decided to train his daughter Saraswati and her friend Rupvati to sing Raga Megh. They practised rigorously so that they could sing the Raga perfectly to bring rain.

अपनी पत्नी से चर्चा करते हुए, उन्होंने महसूस किया कि अगर कोई एक ही समय पर राग मेघ और राग दीपक गाता है तो वह अपनी जान बचा सकता है। चूंकि राग मेघा बारिश लाती है। अगर बारिश होती है तो वह खुद को नहीं जला पायेगा। उन्होंने अपनी बेटी सरस्वती और उसकी दोस्त रूपवती को राग मेघ गाने के लिए प्रशिक्षित करने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने सख्ती से अभ्यास किया ताकि वे बारिश लाने के लिए राग को पूरी तरह से गा सकें।

On the day of Tansen’s performance, he played the Raga perfectly and the air around started to turn warm. The courtiers and the audience were bathed in perspiration. The leaves of the trees died and fell. While Tansen kept playing the music, birds died because of the heat and the river waters began to boil. It became so hot that flames shot up out of now where and lit the lamps which made the people cry out in terror.

तानसेन के प्रदर्शन के दिन, उन्होंने राग को पूरी तरह से बजाया और चारों ओर की हवा गर्म होने लगी। दरबारियों और दर्शकों को पसीने से नहलाया गया। पेड़ों की पत्तियां मर गईं और गिर गईं। जबकि तानसेन संगीत बजाते रहे, पक्षियों की गर्मी के कारण मृत्यु हो गई और नदी का पानी उबलने लगा। यह इतना गर्म हो गया कि आग की लपटें अब कहां से बाहर निकल गईं और दीपक जलाए, जिसने लोगों को आतंक में रुला दिया।

Just as the lamps were lit, Saraswati and Rupvati began to play Megh Raga as they were instructed to by Tansen. The Raga made the sky covered with clouds and rain came over. Thus Tansen was saved. But as the story goes, he fell ill after his performance. Emperor Akbar punished Tansen’s enemies and felt sorry for causing him such suffering. The entire city rejoiced when Tansen became healthy. He stayed in Emperor Akbar’s court till 1585. One can visit his tomb which is located in Gwalior, a pilgrimage place for musicians. 

जैसे दीपक जलाए गए, सरस्वती और रूपवती मेघ राग बजाने लगे, जैसा कि तानसेन द्वारा उन्हें निर्देश दिया गया था। राग ने आकाश को बादलों से ढक दिया और बारिश हुई। इस प्रकार तानसेन बच गए। लेकिन जैसे-जैसे कहानी चलती है, वह अपने प्रदर्शन के बाद बीमार पड़ गए। सम्राट अकबर ने तानसेन के दुश्मनों को दंडित किया और उन्हें इस तरह की पीड़ा देने के लिए खेद महसूस किए। तानसेन के स्वस्थ होने पर पूरा नगर आनंदित हुआ। वह 1585 तक सम्राट अकबर के दरबार में रहे। कोई भी उनकी कब्र की यात्रा कर सकता है जो ग्वालियर में स्थित है, जो संगीतकारों के लिए एक तीर्थ स्थल है।
