Answer the following questions.
1. What was the author’s opinion about Mr. Gessler as a bootmaker?
Answer: According to the author, his boots, as well as the way he made them, were both mysterious and wonderful until recently. He discovered that his boots were the best and that they always fit the owner. They were made only on demand and with the highest quality materials. They lasted for such a long time.
2. Why did the author visit the shop so infrequently?
Answer: Mr. Gessler's boots were always a perfect fit and used to last for a long time. As a result, there was no need to go to the store on a regular basis.
3. What was the effect on Mr. Gessler of the author’s remark about a certain pair of boots?
Answer: Mr. Gessler looked at the author for a long time after hearing the author's remark about a particular pair of boots, as if expecting him to retract his remarks. Then he speculated that the author might have gotten them wet. He instructed the author to return with the boots so that he could repair or adjust the price of the boots in the bills.
4. What was Mr. Gessler’s complaint against “big firms”?
Answer: Mr. Gessler claimed that large corporations were only concerned with the quantity of money and products, not the quality of the boots. Instead of improving the quality of their products, they concentrated on advertising. These forms were only as wealthy as they were because of their advertisements, not because of their work. He complained that people who are passionate about bootmaking don't get as many customers as the big companies do as a result of this. He was not earning enough money because of this.
5. Why did the author order so many pairs of boots? Did he really need them?
Answer: He felt bad for Mr. Gessler, the author ordered so many pairs of
boots. To give him money, he ordered a large number of pairs so that the
shoemaker could earn more. Furthermore, the author must have reasoned that
ordering a large number of pairs of boots would keep the shoemaker busy and
happy.
No, they were not required by the author. He ordered so many boots for the shoemaker's sake, not for himself. He wanted to help the bootmaker financially.

SPEAKING PAGE 80
1. Do you think Mr. Gessler was a failure as a bootmaker or as a competitive businessman?
Answer: Mr. Gessler was a fantastic bootmaker, to say the least. His customers were extremely pleased with the quality of his boots. As a competitive businessman, he was a failure. He didn't have much cash to spend on advertisements. He put all of his earnings into raw materials and rent.
2.
What is the significance of the title? To whom or to what does it refer?
Answer: Mr. Gessler's boots are of exceptional
quality, as evidenced by the title "Quality." He was an expert at it.
He wouldn't let anyone near the boots until they were ready. He was a true
perfectionist who valued quality above all else. Despite the fact that his
business was declining, he never compromised on the quality of the boots he
produced.
The big firms are unconcerned about quality. Customers are attracted to them by advertisements.

4. Speak to five adults in your neighborhood. Ask them the following (in any language they are comfortable in). Then come back and share your findings with the class.
(i) Do they buy their
provisions packed in plastic packets at a big store, or loose, from a smaller
store near their house?
(ii) Where do they buy
their footwear? Do they buy branded footwear, or footwear made locally? What
reasons do they have for their preference?
(iii) Do they buy ready-made clothes, or buy clothes and get their clothes stitched by a tailor? Which do they think is better?
Answer:
(i) Yes, they prefer to buy their groceries in
bulk from smaller stores close to their home.
(ii) They get their daily footwear from local stores. They prefer to buy it from branded stores for office and personal use.
They don't like to spend too much money on their everyday shoes. As a result, they purchase it from local stores.
(iii) They want to look good at work and parties,
and they want their to last a long time and be comfortable. As a result, they
don't mind spending money on it.
They are capable of doing both. They buy ready-made clothes at times and have them stitched by a tailor at other times. It is simple for them to purchase ready-made clothing. They get the most up-to-date fashion while also saving time.

WRITING PAGE 82
1. Based on the following points, write a story.
• Your aunt has gone to her mother’s house.
• Your uncle does his cooking.
• He is absent-minded.
• He puts vegetables on the stove.
• He begins to clean his bicycle outside.
• The neighbor calls out saying something is burning.
• Your uncle rushes to the kitchen.
• To save vegetables, he puts some oil on them.
• Unfortunately, it’s machine oil, not cooking oil.
• What do you think happens to the vegetables?
Begin like this:
Last month my aunt decided to visit her parents…
Answer: My aunt decided to pay a visit to her parents last month. My uncle used to cook for himself because he was alone at home. He was a little sloppy in his thinking. He once went outside to clean his bicycle after putting vegetables on the stove. After a while, a neighbor alerted him to the fact that something was on fire. Uncle dashed into the room. He sprayed some oil on the vegetables to save them. Unfortunately, it was not cooking oil, but rather machine oil. The vegetables were no longer fit to eat. Uncle had no choice but to discard everything.

1. What are the games or human activities
which use trees, or in which trees also “participate''?
Answer: The following are sports or human activities in which trees
are used, or in which trees 'participate' as in the poem:
· Children use
trees to hide while playing hide & seek.
· To play,
children build tree houses.
· Tea gatherings
for adults are held in the shadow of the trees.
· Adults also
use them to paint scenes.
· Swings are
also made from the branches.
2. (i) “The trees are to make no shade in
winter.” What does this mean? (Contrast this line with the line immediately
before it.)
Answer: The trees provide shade during the hot summer months. This
shade is unnecessary in the winter. As a result, people enjoy the warmth of the
sun by standing in it. Hence, trees are to make no shade in winter.
(ii) “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears.” Do
you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think
this line is humorous?
Answer: Yes, I agree that one of the functions of a tree is to
provide fruits and other eatables. Trees provide a lot of food for humans. This
is not a humorous line. Trees are a source of food for humans. Humans do rely
on trees for food and various things.
3. With the help of your partner, try to
rewrite some lines in the poem, or add new ones of your own as in the following
examples.
Trees
are for birds to build nests in.
Trees
are for people to sit under.
Now try to compose a similar poem about water or air.
Answer:
Air air everywhere
Air allows us to breathe
Air helps Kites to fly high in the sky.
