Answer the following questions.
1. Why did the king want no more talk
about the hilsa-fish?
Answer:
Everyone in the entire kingdom talked about nothing but the Hilsa fish. Even
the king’s courtiers would talk about nothing but Hilsa fish. This irritated
the king a lot as he did not want his courtiers to waste their time on such
small talks.
2. What did the king ask Gopal to do to
prove that he was clever?
Answer:
The king was frustrated that the people of his kingdom would talk about nothing
but Hilsa fish, he gave Gopal a challenge to test his intelligence. He asked
Gopal to prove his intelligence by buying a hilsa-fish from the market and then
bringing it to the palace without anyone asking anything about the fish
throughout the way.
3. What three things did Gopal do before
he went to buy his hilsa-fish?
Answer:
Gopal half-shaved his face, smeared ash on his body, and wore rags before he
went to buy Hilsa fish.
4. How did Gopal get inside the palace to
see the king after he had bought the fish?
Answer:
After reaching the king’s palace Gopal told the guards that he wishes to meet
the king. As the guards were not able to recognise him and thought that he was
a madman, they stopped him from going inside. To attract the king’s attention,
Gopal began to sing and dance loudly. The king, hearing his voice, ordered to
get the man inside. That’s how he got inside the palace.
5. Explain why no one seemed to be
interested in talking about the hilsa-fish which Gopal had bought.
Answer:
Gopal had dressed in a very funny way and his funny appearance attracted the
attention of people much more than the Hilsa fish. Everyone in the kingdom was
busy talking about his comical appearance, half-shaved face and torn rags.

about to drink water when he saw his reflection in the water of the pond. He
felt proud to have such beautiful horns. Then, he looked at his legs and
thought that they were so thin and ugly.
One day, some hunters came into the jungle and began
chasing the stag. The stag started to run but his horns got stuck in the
bushes. Then he put in more effort and ran away fast.
When he was out of danger, he thought that the horns
that he was so proud of, could have gotten him killed. And the legs which he
considered to be ugly, were his saviour.

of his garden. It suggests that the poet wants to take some more time to clear

inside the shed, he wants to deal with the matter in the future when he would
have gathered more courage.
