The story begins with Derry, a teenage boy, entering
a garden. Due to an accident in which acid splashed on his face, has caused him to
be burned on one side. He goes there to hide because he is afraid of facing
people. Other people make fun of him for having such a peculiar
appearance. When he enters the garden, he discovers that someone has already
left a gift for him. As a result, he tries to leave but is stopped by Mr. Lamb,
the garden's owner.

and depression as a result of his situation. Mr. Lamb also keeps telling him to
focus on the positive aspects of his life. Mr. Lamb asks Derry to help him
pluck the crab apples in his garden after they've become friends.

He also makes an attempt to move him but receives no response. Finally, he realizes that he is dead and begins to cry.
