The Grand Central Station in New York is divided
into two levels. Nonetheless, Charley, a 31-year-old city inhabitant, believes
that a third level exists. He also claims to have been present. He sees a
psychiatrist friend discuss the situation. He describes it as a
"walking-dream wish fulfilment" and explains Charley's psychology by
saying that "the modern world is full of dread, insecurity, war, and
concern" and that everyone wants to escape to a "temporary
haven from reality." Hobbies like stamp collecting, for example, are an
indication of this escape for him.

Charley finds Grand Central Station to be a maze at times. He had lost his way a couple of times on the subway before. He once walked inside the Roosevelt Hotel's lobby. He also showed up at a three-block away office building the other time. This time, however, he becomes lost and something unusual happens. The third level is visited by Charley!

Sam informs Charley that he has arrived in Galesburg

shop, he learns that Sam exchanged $800 for ancient currency bills to start his
business in Galesburg. After all, Sam was Charley's psychiatric assistant!
