1. What havoc has the super cyclone
wreaked in the life of the people of Orissa?
Answer:
The super cyclone has devastated the families of the people of Orissa. While
many children have been orphaned, women have become widowed. Houses have been
damaged, and what is seen around are animal carcasses and dead bodies.
2. How has Prashant, a teenager, been
able to help the people of his village?
Answer:
Prashant, a nineteen-year-old boy, has been able to help the people of his
village by stepping in as the leader. Not only has he organised a group of
youths and elders to pressure a merchant to once again part with rice, but he
has mobilised women as well. Furthermore, he has put up a polythene sheet
shelter for the children who have lost their parents. He has also asked women to join the
food-for-work programme started by an NGO, and for the children, he has
organised sports events.
3. How have the people of the community
helped one another? What role do the women of Kalikuda play during these days?
Answer:
The women of Kalikuds were no doubt devastated after losing their houses. They
were hungry, but they did not lose hope. The community comprising youths, women,
and elders came together and supported one another. While women, who were
mobilised, looked after orphaned children, the men secured food and materials
for the shelter.
4. Why do Prashant and other volunteers
resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows? What
alternatives do they consider?
Answer:
Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for
orphans because they feel in such institutions children will grow without love.
They consider the alternative of resettling them in their own community itself.
5. Do you think Prashant is a good
leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during
natural calamities?
Answer: I think Prashant is a good leader because he handles the entire situation with a good level of maturity. And yes, I do think people can get together to help people during natural calamities. I believe that as much as disasters cause loss of life and property, they also tend to bring people closer and help them understand the value of non-transactional bonds.
