1. What are the two strange things the
guru and his disciple find in the Kingdom of Fools?
Answer:
The two strange things that the guru and the disciple find in the Kingdom of
Fools are people waking up in the evening, working at night, and going to bed
in the morning and animals not venturing out during the day.
2. Why does the disciple decide to stay
in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?
Answer:
The disciple decides to stay in the Kingdom of Fools because he figures that he
could get anything there for one duddu. Only later does he realise though that
his idea was a bad one.
3. Name all the people who are tried in
the king’s court and give the reasons for their trial.
Answer:
The people tried in the king’s court are the merchant, the bricklayer, the
dancer, the goldsmith, and the disciple. The merchant is tried because it is
his house where the wall breaks, killing the burglar. The bricklayer is
summoned because the merchant informs the king that he is the one who built
that wall. The dancer is summoned and tried, for she causes distraction to the
bricklayer by walking up and down the lane the bricklayer is working on, making
him lose focus, and the goldsmith is tried because he asks the dancer to come
to her house many times without delivering the jewellery in time. The disciple,
nonetheless, is tried because he is a fat man, and therefore, fit to be
executed on the stake.
4. Who is the real culprit according to
the king? Why does he escape punishment?
Answer:
The real culprit, according to the king, is the rich merchant. He escapes
punishment on account of being thin, and thus, unfit to be executed on the
stake.
5. What are the guru’s words of wisdom?
When does the disciple remember them?
Answer: ‘This is a city of fools. You don’t know what they will do next.’ These were the guru’s words of wisdom. The disciple remembers them when he is waiting to be executed on the stake.
6. How does the guru manage to save his
disciple’s life?
Answer: The guru manages to save his disciple’s life by devising a strategy and fooling the king and the minister. He tells the king that the person who gets executed first will be reborn as the king of the place and that the second person executed will be reborn as the minister. Unwilling to give away his position in the next birth, the king lets off the disciple and decides to get executed along with his minister.
