1. Why do the courtiers call the prince
'the Happy Prince'? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?
Answer:
The courtiers call the prince 'the Happy Prince' because he lived in the
Palace, where the meaning of sorrow was not known. However, he is not happy. He
sees all the ugliness and misery of his city around him.
2. Why does the Happy Prince send a ruby
for the seamstress? What does the swallow do in the seamstress' house?
Answer:
The Happy Prince sends a ruby for the seamstress because he feels sad seeing
her condition and that of her little boy, who is ill. The boy is asking the
seamstress for oranges, but on account of being poor, she is not able to give
him a thing but river water. The Happy Prince witnesses all of this through one
of the open windows of the house and wants to help the seamstress and her son.
3. For whom does the prince send the
sapphires and why?
Answer:
The prince sends the sapphires to a playwright and a little matchgirl. He does
so because he discovers that the playwright has no firewood to help him keep
warm so that he may complete the play he is working on. Also, he is hungry and
on the verge of fainting. The little matchgirl, on the other hand, has let her
matches fall into the gutter. The prince seems to know that she would only be
beaten by her father if she failed to bring home some money.
4. What does the swallow see when it
flies over the city?
Answer:
The swallow sees the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, the beggars
sitting at their gates, white faces of starving children looking out
lethargically at the black streets, and two little boys lying in each other's
arms to try and keep themselves warm.
5. Why did the swallow not leave the
prince and go to Egypt?
Answer:
The swallow did not leave the prince and go to Egypt because the prince had
become blind. Evidently, the swallow, which had started feeling sad for the
prince, wanted to give him company
6. What are the precious things mentioned
in the story? Why are they precious?
Answer: The precious things mentioned in the story are the leaden heart and the dead bird. They are precious because even God wants to keep them close to him. In fact, God tells the angel that the bird shall sing forever in his city of gold and the Happy Prince's to whom the leaden heart belonged shall praise him.
