NCERT English Class 11 | Chapter 3 | Discovering Tut: The Saga Continues | Summary

Tutankhamun was the last of the Pharaoh Dynasty's kings. When he died, he was a young man. His death was allegedly a murder, according to some. Howard Carter, an archaeologist, first discovered his tomb in 1922. He was taken for a CT scan after 80 years to help forensic reconstruction solve the mystery of his life and death.

Amenhotep III, his father or grandfather, ruled Egypt for 40 years and was a powerful Pharaoh. Furthermore, his son, Amenhotep IV, succeeded him and began the strangest period in Egyptian history. His name was changed to Akhenaten, which means Athens' servant. From Thebes to Amarna, he changed the religious capital. He later attacked Amun, a god, destroying his images and closing down his temples. He was succeeded by another mysterious ruler, who died tragically soon after. Tutankhamun sat on the throne for nine years and ruled Egypt.

Tut had a lot of gold and wealth when his mummified body was discovered. After so many years, Carter was able to track him down. He intended to examine his three nested boxes after completing his treasure research. Many pieces of the tomb's treasure had already been misplaced.

His tomb was discovered rock-cut 26 feet below ground, with some wall paintings. He was suppressed in the months of March or April, according to the evidence. Carter got himself into some trouble because of one of the coffins. Tut was pasted to the bottom of the solid gold with gums. The toughness of the coffin made it impossible to remove. He tried to lose the resins by exposing the box to the sun for several hours, but it didn't work.

Finally, he used the chisel and hammer to remove the adhesive. Carter realised he didn't have a choice but to cut the mummy from head to toe, or the gold and treasures would have been stolen. His men began by removing the mummy's head, then proceeded to cut off each and every joint. They placed it on top of the sand layer after removing all of the body parts. They stored the parts in a wooden box and returned it to its original location.

Later, in January 2009, the body was subjected to a CT scan, which involves the collection of hundreds of X-Rays and the creation of a three-dimensional image. After the scan, the workmen moved his body from the tomb into a box that night. They went up the ramp and down the stairs, lifting the body onto a hydraulic trailer that held the scanner. The CT scan process came to a halt when the scanner suddenly stopped working. The scan was finally completed after a pair of spare fans were used. They returned his body to his tomb after 3 hours, where he is now resting in peace.

Poem: The Laburnum Top by Ted Hughes

Introduction

Ted Hughes is the author of the poem "The Laburnum Top." It's about the Laburnum tree and the Goldfinch bird having a mutually beneficial relationship. The bird and her young ones bring life to the tree, which is yellow, silent, and death-like. The yellow bird builds her nest in the tree and feeds her young. However, as soon as the bird takes off to fly through the sky, the tree falls silent and lifeless once more.

Summary

The poem begins with a description of the Laburnum tree's still and silent top. Its leaves had turned yellow, and the seeds had rained down on the ground. It was a sunny day in September, and the tree stood motionless and death-like.

The arrival of the Goldfinch bird brings life to the lifeless tree. She came to feed her younger children, who are perched on the branch's thicket. Her safe haven is the tree. With a chirping sound, she reaches the end of the branch. She then moves quickly and cautiously to the other side of the branch, as if she were a lizard. Her younger ones begin chirping like a machine, vibrating and flapping their wings as soon as she arrives. The death-like tree comes to life, trembling and shaking.

She flies to the other side of the branch after feeding them. As she vanished behind the yellow leaves, her dark-colored face and yellow body were barely visible. She took off into the sky, leaving the tree lifeless once more.
