Bholi is sent to school because it is thought that nobody would marry her. Her
mother wanted the teacher to worry about her. However, had the Tehsildar not
asked Bholi’s father to send her to school, he would have confined Bholi to the
four walls of his house.

Bholi enjoy her first day at school?
Answer:
Though she appears frightened at first, she tends to enjoy the first day at
school. She also sees many girls her age and hopes that at least one of them
would become her friend.

she find her teacher different from the people at home?
Answer:
That the teacher is different is sensed by Bholi. Unlike those at home, she
encourages Bholi to speak and overcome her problem of stammering. Also, she
doesn’t mock her.
• Why
do Bholi’s parents accept Bishamber’s marriage proposal?
Answer:
Bholi’s parents are left with no choice but to accept Bishamber’s marriage
proposal. They feel that not accepting the proposal would mean Bholi staying
unmarried for the rest of her life.

does the marriage not take place?
Answer:
The marriage does not take place because Bholi doesn’t want to get wedded to
the groom, for he had demanded dowry - a sum of five thousand rupees - for
getting wedded to an ugly girl with marks on her face.

going to school. What made her feel that she was going to a better place than
her home?
Answer:
Bholi was given nice clothes to wear. She was also given a bath and her hair
was oiled. All of this somehow made Bholi feel that school would be a better
place than home, and this thought came despite the apprehension she initially
nurtured.
2. How did Bholi’s teacher play an
important role in changing the course of her life?
Answer:
Bholi’s teacher encouraged Bholi. She did not mock her. In fact, she asked her
to speak moire in order to overcome the problem of stammering.
3. Why did Bholi at first agree to an
unequal match? Why did she later reject the marriage? What does this tell us
about her?
Answer:
Bholi first agreed to get married to a man who was old. But on the day of the
wedding, she expressed her unwillingness to get married to him. This was
because she did not like the groom demanding money to get married to an ugly
girl with marks on her face. Bholi did not want to have a greedy man as her
husband. This tells us that she valued self-respect.
4. Bholi’s real name is Sulekha. We are
told this right at the beginning. But only in the last but one paragraph of the
story is Bholi called Sulekha again. Why do you think she is called Sulekha at
that point in the story?
Answer:
The word ‘Bholi’ means someone who is too naive, a fool, a simpleton. She is
called by her real name only at the end because she proves that she is a brave
woman. Moreover, she stops stammering at this point in time.
5. Bholi’s story must have moved you. Do
you think girl children are not treated at par with boys? You are aware that
the government has introduced a scheme to save the girl child as the sex ratio
is declining. The scheme is called Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl
Child.
