1. (i) What was the Great Stone Face?
Answer: The Great Stone Face was a product of nature. It was a cluster of rocks thrown together on the vertical side of a mountain. When seen from a distance, the rocks looked like a human face, but if the observer went too near, he lost the outline and all he could see was a heap of large rocks that were piled one upon another.
(ii) What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it?
Answer: When young Ernest gazed at the Great Stone Face, he wished it could speak, for he was intrigued by its kind appearance.
2. What was the story attributed to the Stone Face?
Answer: The story attributed to the Stone Face was that a boy born in or near the valley would go on to become the greatest and noblest person of his time at an unspecified time in the future. The story also had it that the face of the person would look similar to that of the Great Stone Face.
3. What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time?
Answer: The resemblance of a man named Gathergold, who had moved to a distant seaport many years ago, to that of the Great Stone Face gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true. He had become very rich, and when he returned to the valley, the people presupposed that the prophecy had finally been fulfilled.
4. (i) Did Ernest see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face?
Answer: No. The likeness of the Stone Face couldn’t be seen by Ernest in Gathergold. In fact, Ernest felt sad and turned his face away from Gathergold’s unpleasant face.
(ii) Who did he confide in and how was he proved right?
Answer: Ernest confided in the Great Stone Face and was proven right when it came to fore that Gathergold had died a poor man. His wealth had dwindled before he passed away, and people soon agreed that the ruined merchant hadn’t had any resemblance to the Great Stone Face.
5. (i) What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man?
Answer: The fact that General Blood-and-Thunder, a son of the valley, had risen to the rank of a famous commander made people believe that he was their man.
(ii)
Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude?
Answer: After having compared the man’s face with the Stone Face, Ernest arrived at the conclusion that the both had little in common. He concluded that the man prophesied was yet to make his appearance.
