II. Answer the following questions in one or two sentences.
1. Why was Kezia afraid of her father?
Answer: Kezia was afraid of her father because he was a domineering man. Not only was he strict, but he was also quite violent.
2. Who were the people in Kezia’s family?
Answer: Kezia’s family had a total of four members - Kezia, her parents, and her grandmother.
3. What was Kezia’s father’s routine
(i)
before going to his office?
(ii)
after coming back from his office?
(iii)
on Sundays?
Answer:
(i) Kezia’s father would enter
Kezia’s room to give her a casual kiss before heading for work.
(ii) After returning from work,
Kezia’s father asked for tea to be delivered to his drawing-room. Then, he
would ask his wife to bring him the newspaper and his slippers and would tell
Kezia to pull off his boots.
(iii) Kezia's father would lay himself down on the sofa on Sundays. He would sleep with his face covered with a handkerchief.
4. In what ways did Kezia’s
grandmother encourage her to get to know her father better?
Answer: Kezia’s grandmother would ask Kezia to have a discussion with her father on Sundays. Once, she told Kezia to make a pin cushion on the occasion of her father’s birthday.
III. Discuss these questions in class with your teacher and then write down your answers in two or three paragraphs each.
1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?
Answer: Kezia was terrified of her father. His presence almost always
made her feel uncomfortable. Every Sunday, her grandmother would ask her to
discuss with her dad in the drawing-room. Nevertheless, she only irritated her
father with her presence. In fact, her father used to address her as 'little
brown owl'.
It so happened once that Kezia’s grandmother suggested Kezia craft a pin-cushion as a gift for her father’s birthday. While stitching the cushion, Kezia needed scraps, so she searched her mother's bedroom. After finding some sheets of paper on the bed table, she gathered tore them up, filling the cushion with those torn pieces.
But sadly, it was only later that she got to know those scraps were her father's speech for the Port Authority. So, even though she wanted to make him happy, she ended up upsetting her father.
2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. What kind of father was Mr Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?
Answer: Mr Macdonald was a friendly father. Unlike Kezia’s father who was strict and violent, Mr Macdonald played with his kids and was caring and kind towards them.
While there is little doubt that both the fathers were different from each other, Kezia concluded that there were different kinds of fathers only after having seen Mr Macdonald behaving in a cool and nonchalant way with his kids. As a matter of fact, he did not even seem to scold his children when they did something naughty but rather laughed off their naughty action of theirs.
3. How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy.
Answer: Once Kezia’s mother became ill, and this led to her being taken to the hospital. Her grandmother went to the hospital too. Thus, Kezia was home with Alice, who was the cook, and her father. When Alice tried putting Kezia to bed, Kezia got afraid. She asked what she would do if she got a nightmare, telling her that her grandmother would take her bed when she had nightmares. But Alice just asked her to go to sleep.
When the nightmare finally came, Kezia woke up, shivering, only to find her father standing with a candle beside her bed. He then caught Kezia in his arms after blowing off the candle. He even asked her to run her feet against his legs to get some warmth. That’s exactly when Kezia began to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy.

laid to sleep by their mother.
4. Is the poet now a child? Is his mother
still alive?
Answer:

whether his mother is alive or not. However, she doesn’t seem to be living with
him.
II. 1. When you were a young child, did
your mother tuck you in, as the poet’s did?

Although
I can’t remember those days, my mother tells me that she tucked me in. She adds
that I would cry often, only to later be fed milk and then put to sleep.
2. Do you like rain? What do you do when
it rains steadily or heavily as described in the poem?
Answer:
I
don’t really like rain. The weather gets humid, and I am bound to stay indoors.
Also, the roads get damaged. When it rains steadily, I do manage to go out,
sometimes even get drenched in the rain. But when it rains heavily, I prefer
staying indoors.
3. Does everybody have a cosy bed to lie
in when it rains? Look around you and describe how different kinds of people or
animals spend time, seek shelter etc. during rain.
Answer: No, everybody doesn't have a cosy bed to lie in when it rains. The homeless have to spend their time outside even when there are horrific storms. After all, they don't have a place to take shelter. Be that as it may, different animals behave differently during rain. Squirrels oftentimes seem to enjoy themselves when it rains. Larger animals like cats and dogs look for shelter. There are a few animals like rats who get inside houses during heavy rains, feeding on the foodstuffs they find there.
