Answer the following questions.

1. Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring it up?

Answer: The bear cub was found in the forest by the lady. It was half-dead from starvation, and it was small and helpless. The lady and the old cook had to bring it up on the bottle.

2. The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. Give three examples to prove this.

Answer: The following are three examples that show he was a very friendly bear:

He used to watch the cattle grazing in a friendly manner.

The three dogs would tease him, pull his ears, and play with him.

He used to let kids ride on his back.

3. What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?

Answer: Porridge, bread, cabbage, potato, and turnip were all eaten by the bear, just like the dogs. He was fond of fruits. He was not permitted to pick apples from the trees. He later discovered that it was ethically wrong. He wasn't allowed to touch the beehives, at all.

4. When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?

Answer: In most cases, the bear was only chained at night. Whenever he did any form of mischief, he was tied up.  The lady, on the other hand, went to see her sister who lived on the other side of the mountain lake on Sunday. It was dangerous to travel through the forest with the bear. So the bear was chained for the entire day on Sundays.

5. What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction?

Answer: On her way to her sister's house one Sunday, the lady noticed a bear approaching at full speed. The lady became enraged because she mistook him for her pet. She scolded him and told him to return because she was already late for lunch. He had even misplaced his new collar, she noticed. This enraged her, and she hit him over the face with her parasol. The parasol shattered into two pieces. The bear opened his mouth several times as if to say something, before turning around and walking away.

6. Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?

Answer: In the evening, the bear was looking down on himself because he didn't want to stay locked in his room and instead wanted to go for a walk with his mistress.

The cook became enraged with her mistress after she scolded the bear for following her into the forest. The cook stated that he had not left the room at any point during the day and had been sitting there quietly all day.

1. Most people keep dogs and cats as pets. Can you think of some unusual pets that people keep?

Answer: Many Indians used to keep a variety of wild animals as pets. Not only deer and bears but also wolves and tigers were among them. In our country, there are many snake-charmers who keep snakes as pets. Crocodiles are kept as pets by some foreigners and even Indians in the South.

2. The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?
