1. Why did Swami Haridas say Tansen was ‘talented’?

Answer: Swami Haridas had heard Tansen imitate perfectly the roar of the lion and that is why he said that Tansen was ‘talented’.

2. Why did Akbar ask Tansen to join his court?

Answer: Tansen was asked by Akbar to join his court because he was impressed by Tansen’s talent for singing.

3. How do we know that Akbar was fond of Tansen? Give two reasons.

Answer: We know that Akbar was fond of Tansen because he would just walk into Tansen’s house and hear him play, he would shower Tansen with presents.

4. What did the other courtiers feel about Tansen?

Answer: The courtiers felt jealous of Tansen and they thought that they will never be at peace until Tansen is ruined.

5. (i) What happens if Raga Deepak is sung properly?

   (ii) Why did Tansen’s enemies want him to sing the Raga?

Answer:

(i) If Raga Deepak is sung properly then the air will become so hot that it will burn down the singer into ashes.

(ii) Tansen’s enemies wanted his ruin and they knew that if Tansen sang Raga Deepak correctly he would surely burn and die and they will get rid of him.

6. Why did Tansen agree to sing Raga Deepak?

Answer: Akbar had requested him to sing Raga Deepak to prove his talent, Tansen could not disobey the king although he was afraid and thus agreed to sing Raga Deepak.

7. (i) What steps did he take to save himself?

   (ii) Did his plan work? How?

Answer:

(i) Tansen had an idea to save himself. He knew that if someone would sing Raga Megh, and if someone sings it properly it will bring rain which will help him.

(ii) He trained his daughter Saraswati and her friend Rupvati to sing Raga Megh. He made them practice rigorously so that they could sing it with perfection.

On the day of his performance, when Tansen had sung Raga Deepak and the lamps had lit, the girls began to sing Raga Megh that brought rain. This helped him save himself from death.
