QUESTIONS II                                                                      PAGE 51

1. How did Vijay Singh use the egg? How did he use the lump of salt?

Answer: Vijay Singh offered the ghost a rock and instructed him to squeeze it. He informed the ghost that the rock was brimming with liquid. The ghost couldn't get the rock to squeeze. Vijay Singh then mocked the ghost and carefully took the egg in his palm before taking the rock from him. When he squeezed the egg, yellow fluid trickled down, fooling the ghost into believing he was actually squeezing the rock.

The ghost was then challenged by Vijay Singh to break another rock. He replied it was nothing but salt this time. The rock was too strong for the ghost to crush. Then Vijay Singh took the rock from the ghost in his palm and put it in his pocket. He broke the chunk of salt and tossed the rock into the void. Vijay Singh had so demonstrated that he was far stronger than the ghost.

2. Why did Vijay Singh conclude that the ghost would not be a worthy opponent to him? Was he fair in his judgement?

Answer: Vijay Singh felt that the ghost would not be a good opponent because he was unable to complete any of Vijay Singh's challenges, including crushing the fluid-filled rock and crumbling the salt-filled rock.

3. Why did Vijay Singh ask the ghost to accompany him to town next day?

Answer: Vijay Singh requested that the ghost accompany him to town the next day so that he could boast that he had defeated a ghost. As his prisoner, he desired the spirit to accompany him.

4. What made the ghost believe Vijay Singh was dead?

Answer: The ghost's thumping on the backrest, which he assumed was Vijay Singh, elicited no sound or groan. This led the ghost to believe Vijay Singh was no longer alive.

5. Vijay Singh complained of insects in the cave. What was he referring to, and why?

Answer: The ghost had thrashed Vijay Singh seven times with his heavy club, thinking he was sleeping on the bed.

Vijay Singh claimed that an insect fluttered its wings seven times on him. He did so to demonstrate that he was so powerful that the sturdy club's beatings were as ineffective as an insect's flap.

6. Was it really a ghost who Vijay Singh befooled? Who do you think it was?

Answer: Vijay Singh was duped by a ghost, not a genuine one. I believe he was a deceitful human who pretended to be a ghost in order to deceive others. He would take advantage of their fear and rob them of their belongings.
