NCERT English Class 6 | Chapter 1 | A Tale of Two Birds | Question Answer |

QUESTIONS                                                                          PAGE 3

1. How did the two baby birds get separated?

Answer: The two baby birds shared a nest in a tall, shady tree with their mother. There was a large storm with thunder, lightning, and rain one day.  The mother bird was killed when a large, hefty branch fell on the nest. The two baby birds were separated by the strong wind, which blew them to the other end of the forest.

2. Where did each of them find a home?

Answer: One of the baby birds landed near a cave inhabited by a bunch of thieves. The other baby bird landed a couple of miles away outside a rishi's ashram. As a result, they entered themselves into two distinct sites.

3. What did the first bird say to the stranger?

Answer: The first bird noticed the visitor, who turned out to be the King. He summoned the robbers to come as soon as possible and plunder the King of his jewels and horse. The stranger had been warned indirectly about the dangers of sitting near the cave by the bird.

4. What did the second bird say to him?

Answer: The second bird greeted the King as he arrived at the ashram. He invited the stranger to enter the ashram, rest for a while, and make himself at home. He went on to say that the first bird was his brother, who had made friends with thieves and thus spoke in the same manner.

5. How did the Rishi explain the different ways in which the birds behaved?

Answer: The king was taken aback by the disparity in the two birds' behaviour. The rishi stated that the first bird repeated the words he had always heard at the ashram, while the second bird repeated the words he had heard from the robbers. This means that the two birds' differing ways of behaving were caused by the setting in which they thrived.

6. Which one of the following sums up the story best?

(i) A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

(ii) One is known by the company one keeps.

(iii) A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Answer: (ii) One is known by the company one keeps.
