About the Author
Vikram Seth is a polyglot and one of India’s most celebrated modern authors, born on June 20, 1952, in Kolkata. He received an elite education, attending The Doon School in India before moving to the United Kingdom to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He later pursued higher studies at Stanford University and Nanjing University, gaining a deep understanding of diverse cultures that frequently permeates his writing.
Seth’s literary repertoire is remarkably versatile, spanning poetry, travelogues, and massive prose works. He shot to international fame with his monumental novel, A Suitable Boy (1993), one of the longest novels ever published in a single volume. His other notable works include the novel-in-verse The Golden Gate and the music-themed An Equal Music. Over his illustrious career, he has been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, and the Padma Shri, cementing his legacy as a master of the English language.
Explanation in Hindi
The following poem is taken from Mappings which was published in 1981 and is included in the Collected Poems by Vikram Seth. The king, in this poem, is ‘just and placid.’ Does he carry his notion of justice a bit too far?
यह कविता 'मैपिंग्स' से ली गई है जो 1981 में प्रकाशित हुई थी और विक्रम सेठ की 'कलेक्टेड पोयम्स' में शामिल है। इस कविता का राजा 'न्यायप्रिय और सौम्य' है। क्या वह न्याय की अपनी धारणा को कुछ ज़्यादा ही आगे ले जाता है?

In the city of which I sing
There was a just and placid King.
जिस शहर का मैं गान कर रहा हूँ,
वहाँ एक न्यायप्रिय और शांत स्वभाव का राजा रहता था।
The King proclaimed an arch should be
Constructed, that triumphally
राजा ने घोषणा की कि एक मेहराब (विजय द्वार) बनाया जाए,
जो विजय के प्रतीक के रूप में—
Would span the major thoroughfare
To edify spectators there.

The workmen went and built the thing.
They did so since he was the King.

The King rode down the thoroughfare
To edify spectators there.
राजा दर्शकों को प्रभावित करने के लिए

Under the arch he lost his crown.
The arch was built too low. A frown
मेहराब के नीचे से गुजरते वक्त उसका मुकुट गिर गया।
मेहराब बहुत नीचा बनाया गया था।
Appeared upon his placid face.
The King said, ‘This is a disgrace.
उस राजा के शांत चेहरे पर गुस्से की लकीरें उभर आईं।
राजा ने कहा, "यह घोर अपमान है।"
The chief of builders will be hanged.’
The rope and gallows were arranged.
"मुख्य निर्माता (चीफ बिल्डर) को फाँसी पर लटका दिया जाएगा।"
तुरंत रस्सी और फंदे का इंतज़ाम किया गया।
The chief of builders was led out.
He passed the King. He gave a shout,
मुख्य निर्माता को बाहर लाया गया।
जब वह राजा के पास से गुज़रा, तो वह चिल्ला पड़ा—
‘O King, it was the workmen’s fault’
‘Oh!’ said the King, and called a halt
"ओ महाराज! यह तो मज़दूरों की गलती थी!"
"ओह!" राजा ने कहा, और कार्यवाही रोक दी।
To the proceedings. Being just
(And placider now) he said, ‘I must
न्यायप्रिय (और अब और भी शांत) होने के नाते
उसने कहा, "तो फिर मुझे—
Have all the workmen hanged instead.’
The workmen looked surprised, and said,
—उसकी जगह सभी मज़दूरों को फाँसी पर लटकाना होगा।"
मज़दूर हैरान रह गए और बोले—
‘O King, you do not realise
The bricks were made of the wrong size.’
"महाराज, आप समझ नहीं रहे हैं,
असल में ईंटें ही गलत आकार की बनाई गई थीं।"
‘Summon the masons!’ said the King.
The masons stood there quivering.
राजा ने कहा, "राजमिस्त्रियों को हाजिर करो!"
राजमिस्त्री वहाँ थर-थर कांपते हुए खड़े हो गए।
‘It was the architect...’, they said,
The architect was summoned.
उन्होंने कहा, "यह तो वास्तुकार (आर्किटेक्ट) की गलती थी..."
वास्तुकार को तलब किया गया।
‘Well, architect,’ said His Majesty.
‘I do ordain that you shall be
महाराज ने कहा, "तो वास्तुकार महोदय,
मैं आदेश देता हूँ कि तुम्हें—
Hanged.’ Said the architect, ‘O King,
You have forgotten one small thing.
—फाँसी दी जाए।" वास्तुकार ने कहा, "महाराज,
आप एक छोटी सी बात भूल रहे हैं।"
You made certain amendments to
The plans when I showed them to you.’
"जब मैंने आपको नक्शा दिखाया था,
तब आपने ही उसमें कुछ बदलाव किए थे।"
The King heard this. The King saw red.
In fact he nearly lost his head;
यह सुनते ही राजा गुस्से से लाल हो गया।
सच तो यह है कि उसका दिमाग चकरा गया था;
But being a just and placid King
He said, ‘This is a tricky thing.
लेकिन एक न्यायप्रिय और शांत राजा होने के नाते
उसने कहा, "यह तो बड़ा पेचीदा मामला है।"
I need some counsel. Bring to me
The wisest man in this country.’
"मुझे मशवरे की ज़रूरत है।
देश के सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को मेरे पास लेकर आओ।"
The wisest man was found and brought,
Nay, carried, to the Royal Court.
सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को ढूँढा गया और राजदरबार लाया गया,
बल्कि यूँ कहें कि उठाकर लाया गया।
He could not walk and could not see,
So old (and therefore wise) was he —
वह इतना बूढ़ा (और इसलिए बुद्धिमान) था
कि न चल सकता था और न ही देख सकता था—
But in a quavering voice he said,
‘The culprit must be punished.
लेकिन अपनी कांपती हुई आवाज़ में उसने कहा,
"अपराधी को सज़ा मिलनी ही चाहिए।"
Truly, the arch it was that banged
The crown off, and it must be hanged’.
"सच तो यह है कि वह मेहराब ही था जिसने मुकुट को टक्कर मारी,
इसलिए उसे ही फाँसी मिलनी चाहिए।"
To the scaffold the arch was led
When suddenly a Councillor said —
मेहराब को फाँसी के तख्ते की ओर ले जाया जाने लगा,
तभी अचानक एक दरबारी बोला—
‘How can we hang so shamefully
What touched your head, Your Majesty?’
"महाराज, हम उस चीज़ को इतनी शर्मनाक तरीके से फाँसी कैसे दे सकते हैं
जिसने आपके पावन सिर को स्पर्श किया हो?"
‘True,’ mused the King. By now the crowd,
Restless, was muttering aloud.
"सच है," राजा सोच में पड़ गया। अब तक भीड़
बेचैन होकर आपस में कानाफूसी करने लगी थी।
The King perceived their mood and trembled
And said to all who were assembled —
राजा ने उनके बदलते मिज़ाज को भांप लिया
और डरते हुए सभा में मौजूद लोगों से कहा—
‘Let us postpone consideration
Of finer points like guilt. The nation
"आइए हम दोष जैसे सूक्ष्म बिंदुओं पर
विचार करना स्थगित करें। यह राष्ट्र—
Wants a hanging. Hanged must be
Someone, and that immediately.’
—फाँसी चाहता है। किसी न किसी को फाँसी
मिलनी ही चाहिए, और वह भी इसी वक्त।"
The noose was set up somewhat high.
Each man was measured by and by.
फाँसी का फंदा थोड़ा ऊँचा लगाया गया।
हर व्यक्ति को बारी-बारी से नापा गया।
But only one man was so tall
He fitted. One man. That was all.
लेकिन केवल एक ही व्यक्ति इतना लंबा था कि
वह उस फंदे में फिट बैठा। सिर्फ एक आदमी। और बस वही।
He was the King. His Majesty
Was therefore hanged by Royal Decree.
वह खुद राजा था। इसलिए शाही हुक्म के अनुसार
महाराज को ही फाँसी पर लटका दिया गया।
‘Thank Goodness we found someone,’ said
The Ministers, ‘for if instead
मंत्रियों ने कहा, "भगवान का शुक्र है कि हमें कोई तो मिला,
वरना इसके बदले—
We had not, the unruly town
Might well have turned against the Crown.’
—अगर हमें कोई न मिलता, तो यह उग्र शहर
सत्ता के खिलाफ बगावत कर देता।"
‘Long live the King!’ the Ministers said.
‘Long live the King! The King is dead.’
मंत्रियों ने कहा, "महाराज अमर रहें!
महाराज अमर रहें! महाराज मर चुके हैं।"
They pondered the dilemma; then,
Being practical-minded men,
उन्होंने इस धर्मसंकट पर विचार किया; फिर
व्यावहारिक बुद्धि वाले पुरुष होने के नाते—
Sent out the heralds to proclaim
(In His [former] Majesty’s name):
—उन्होंने मुनादी करने वाले दूतों को
(पूर्व महाराज के नाम पर) यह ऐलान करने भेजा:
‘The next to pass the City Gate
Will choose the ruler of our state,
"अगला व्यक्ति जो शहर के द्वार से गुज़रेगा,
वही हमारे राज्य का अगला शासक चुनेगा।"
As is our custom. This will be
Enforced with due ceremony.’
"जैसा कि हमारा रिवाज़ है, इसे पूरे
विधि-विधान के साथ लागू किया जाएगा।"
A man passed by the City Gate.
An idiot. The guards cried, ‘Wait!
शहर के दरवाज़े से एक आदमी गुज़रा।
एक बेवकूफ। पहरेदार चिल्लाए, "रुको!"
Who is to be the King? Decide!’/
‘A melon,’ the idiot replied.
"राजा कौन बनेगा? तय करो!"
मूर्ख ने जवाब दिया, "एक तरबूज।"
This was his standard answer to
All questions. (He liked melons.) ‘You
यह हर सवाल के लिए उसका
रटा-रटाया जवाब था। (उसे तरबूज पसंद थे।) "अब तुम—
Are now our King,’ the Ministers said,
Crowning a melon. Then they led
—हमारे राजा हो," मंत्रियों ने एक तरबूज को
ताज पहनाते हुए कहा। फिर वे उसे—
(Carried) the Melon to the throne
And reverently set it down.
—सिंहासन तक लेकर गए (उठाकर)

This happened years and years ago.
When now you ask the people, ‘So —
यह बरसों-बरस पहले हुआ था।
अब जब आप वहाँ के लोगों से पूछते हैं, "तो—
Your King appears to be a melon.
How did this happen?’, they say, ‘Well, on
आपका राजा तो एक तरबूज लगता है।
यह कैसे हुआ?", तो वे कहते हैं, "खैर, यह तो—
Account of customary choice.
If His Majesty rejoice
—पारंपरिक चुनाव का परिणाम है।
अगर महाराज को—
In being a melon, that’s OK
With us, for who are we to say
—तरबूज होने में ही खुशी मिलती है, तो हमें
कोई दिक्कत नहीं है। हम यह कहने वाले कौन होते हैं—
What he should be as long as he
Leaves us in Peace and Liberty?’
—कि उन्हें क्या होना चाहिए, जब तक कि वे
हमें शांति और आज़ादी से रहने देते हैं?"
The principles of laissez faire
Seem to be well-established there.
ऐसा लगता है कि वहाँ 'अहस्तक्षेप' (Laissez-faire)
के सिद्धांत पूरी तरह से जड़ें जमा चुके हैं।
