About the Author

John Keats (1795–1821), a quintessential figure of the British Romantic movement, was born in Moorgate, London. Despite his profound literary legacy, Keats’s early path was scientific; he was formally educated and trained to be a surgeon at Guy’s Hospital. However, driven by an overwhelming passion for the arts, he eventually abandoned medicine to devote himself wholly to poetry.
Keats is celebrated for his extraordinary ability to perceive the world through a sensory lens, translating deep moods and aspirations into lush, evocative language. His major achievements include his celebrated Odes and the epic poem Endymion: A Poetic Romance, based on Greek legend. Though his career was tragically cut short by tuberculosis at age twenty-five, he remains one of the most influential poets in English literature, renowned for his philosophy that "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

Although trained to be a surgeon, Keats decided to devote himself wholly to poetry. Keats’ secret, his power to sway and delight the readers, lies primarily in his gift for perceiving the world and living his moods and aspirations in terms of language. The following is an excerpt from his poem ‘Endymion; A Poetic Romance’. The poem is based on a Greek legend, in which Endymion, a beautiful young shepherd and poet who lived on Mount Latmos, had a vision of Cynthia, the Moon Goddess. The enchanted youth resolved to seek her out and so wandered away through the forest and down under the sea.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever
Its loveliness increases, it will never
Pass into nothingness; but will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.
सुंदरता की एक वस्तु सदैव के लिए आनंद का स्रोत होती है। इसकी मनोहरता निरंतर बढ़ती जाती है; यह कभी भी शून्यता में विलीन नहीं होती; बल्कि यह हमारे लिए एक शांत कुंज और मीठे सपनों से भरी नींद, उत्तम स्वास्थ्य और सुकून भरी सांसें प्रदान करती है।

A flowery band to bind us to the earth,
Spite of despondence, of the inhuman dearth
Of noble natures, of the gloomy days,
Of all the unhealthy and o’er-darkened ways
Made for our searching: yes, in spite of all,
Some shape of beauty moves away the pall

We have imagined for the mighty dead;
All lovely tales that we have heard or read;
An endless fountain of immortal drink,
Pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink.
और वैसी ही भव्यता उन गौरवशाली अंत (प्रलय) में भी है, जिसकी कल्पना हमने अपने पराक्रमी पूर्वजों के लिए की है; वे सभी सुंदर कहानियाँ जो हमने सुनी या पढ़ी हैं; ये सब अमर अमृत के उस अनंत फव्वारे के समान हैं, जो स्वर्ग के किनारे से हम पर बरस रहा है।

व्याख्या: सुंदरता केवल देखने वाली चीज़ों में नहीं, बल्कि उन कहानियों और बलिदानों में भी है जो हमारे पूर्वजों ने दिए। यह सब स्वर्ग से गिरने वाले अमृत के समान है जो हमारी आत्मा को तृप्त करता है। 
उदाहरण: जब हम महान देशभक्तों या वीरों की कहानियाँ पढ़ते हैं, तो उनके 'महान अंत' (grandeur of dooms) हमें प्रेरित करते हैं और हमें गौरव की अनुभूति कराते हैं।
