About the Author 

Kamala Das (1934–2009), a towering figure in Indian literature, was born in Punnayurkulam, Malabar, Kerala. Born into a family of distinguished writers, her education was largely private and informal, shaped by a rich literary environment. She spent much of her youth between the traditional landscapes of Kerala and the urban bustle of Calcutta.
Writing in both English and Malayalam (under the pen name Madhavikutty), her work is celebrated for its startling honesty and "indigenous flavour of the soil." Her extensive bibliography includes five acclaimed poetry collections and numerous novels and short stories. Her achievements are highlighted by her ability to capture the "complex subtleties of human relationships" through a lyrical, often confessional idiom. A pioneer of modern Indian poetry, she received the Sahitya Akademi Award and was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984, cementing her legacy as a fearless voice for women’s inner lives. 

She is recognised as one of India’s foremost poets. Her works are known for their originality, versatility and the indigenous flavour of the soil. Kamala Das has published many novels and short stories in English and Malayalam under the name ‘Madhavikutty’. In addition to five books of poetry. She is a sensitive writer who captures the complex subtleties of human relationships in lyrical idiom, My Mother at Sixty-six is an example.

  बुढ़ापा एक स्वाभाविक प्रक्रिया है; क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि हमारे बुज़ुर्ग माता-पिता हमसे क्या उम्मीद करते हैं?

Driving from my parent’s home to Cochin last Friday morning, I saw my mother, beside me, doze, open mouthed, her face ashen like that of a corpse and realised with pain that she was as old as she looked...
पिछले शुक्रवार की सुबह, अपने माता-पिता के घर से कोचीन जाते समय, मैंने अपनी माँ को अपने पास बैठा देखा। वह ऊँघ रही थीं, उनका मुँह खुला था और उनका चेहरा किसी शव की तरह पीला (राख जैसा) पड़ गया था। मैंने बड़े दर्द के साथ महसूस किया कि वे वास्तव में उतनी ही बूढ़ी हो गई हैं, जितनी वे दिख रही थीं...

व्याख्या: यहाँ कवयित्री अपनी माँ के ढलते शरीर और बुढ़ापे को देखकर स्तब्ध है। 'शव' (Corpse) से तुलना करना यह दर्शाता है कि माँ के चेहरे की चमक खो चुकी है और वे मृत्यु के करीब दिख रही हैं। यह अहसास कवयित्री के लिए बहुत दर्दनाक है।
उदाहरण: जब हम लंबे समय बाद अपने माता-पिता से मिलते हैं और अचानक उनके सफेद बालों या चेहरे की झुर्रियों पर गौर करते हैं, तो हमें समय के बीतने का गहरा डर महसूस होता है।

...लेकिन जल्द ही मैंने उस विचार को दिल से निकाल दिया और बाहर भागते हुए युवा पेड़ों को और अपने घरों से खुशी-खुशी बाहर निकलते बच्चों को देखने लगी... 

व्याख्या: कवयित्री अपने मन के डर और दुख को दूर करने के लिए कार की खिड़की से बाहर देखती है। बाहर का नज़ारा अंदर के नज़ारे से बिल्कुल उल्टा है। अंदर एक बूढ़ी माँ है जो जीवन की अंतिम अवस्था में है, जबकि बाहर 'भागते पेड़' और 'खेलते बच्चे' जीवन, ऊर्जा और गति के प्रतीक हैं।
उदाहरण: जब हम किसी गहरे दुख में होते हैं, तो अक्सर हम अपना मन बहलाने के लिए खिड़की से बाहर देखते हैं या पार्क में खेलते बच्चों को देखते हैं ताकि नकारात्मक विचारों से बचा जा सके।

...लेकिन एयरपोर्ट पर सुरक्षा जाँच के बाद, कुछ गज की दूरी पर खड़े होकर, मैंने उन्हें फिर से देखा—वे फीकी और पीली दिख रही थीं, जैसे सर्दियों के अंत का चाँद हो। मुझे वही पुराना जाना-पहचाना दर्द महसूस हुआ, मेरे बचपन का डर। पर मैंने सिर्फ इतना कहा, "जल्द ही मिलेंगे, अम्मा," और मैं बस मुस्कुराती रही, मुस्कुराती रही और मुस्कुराती रही... 

व्याख्या: सर्दियों का चाँद धुंधला होता है और उसमें चमक नहीं होती, ठीक वैसे ही माँ का चेहरा निस्तेज हो गया है। कवयित्री के बचपन का डर—अपनी माँ को खोने का डर—फिर से उभर आता है। विदाई के समय वह अपना दुख छिपाने के लिए केवल मुस्कुराती है ताकि उसकी माँ को उसके डर का पता न चले।
उदाहरण: जब कोई बच्चा पहली बार हॉस्टल जाता है या विदा होता है, तो वह रोना चाहता है, लेकिन अपने माता-पिता को हिम्मत देने के लिए वह अपनी आँखों में आँसू छिपाकर झूठी मुस्कान बिखेरता है। 

Theme (विषय/प्रसंग): इस कविता का मुख्य विषय बुढ़ापा (Ageing) और मृत्यु का अटल सत्य है, जिसके साथ अपनों को खोने का डर और अलगाव की पीड़ा जुड़ी होती है।

Main Idea (मुख्य विचार/धारणा): कवयित्री यह संदेश देती है कि समय किसी का इंतज़ार नहीं करता और अपनों के खोने का डर मानवीय रिश्तों का एक अभिन्न अंग है, जिसे हम अक्सर मुस्कुराहट के पीछे छिपा लेते हैं।
