SCENE: A small cottage interior. There is an entrance back right (which may be curtained). Another door to the left must be a practical door. The furniture is simple, consisting of a small table towards the left, a chair or two, and a divan rather upstage on the right. On the table is a telephone.

Whilst he is thus engaged, another man, similar in build to Gerrard enters from the right silently — revolver in hand. He is flashily dressed in an overcoat and a soft hat. He bumps accidentally against the table, and at the sound Gerrard turns quickly.

भगवान के लिए अपने इस उलझे हुए दिमाग को साफ करो और चलो। मेरे साथ कार में चलो। तुम मेरे काम आ सकते हो। अगर तुम्हें लगे कि यह कोई जाल है, तो मैं कार में तुम्हारे साथ रहूँगा, और तुम्हारी बंदूक तो तुम्हारे पास होगी ही।
INTRUDER : May be you’re right. / शायद तुम सही कह रहे हो।
GERRARD : Then don’t waste time. (Goes and picks up hat and bag.)
तो फिर समय बर्बाद मत करो। (जाकर टोपी और बैग उठाता है।)
INTRUDER : Careful, boss, I’m watching you. / सावधान रहना बॉस, मैं तुम पर नज़र रख रहा हूँ।
GERRARD : I have got a man posted on the main road. He’ll ring up if he sees the police, but I don’t want to leave... (telephone bell rings) Come on! They’re after us. Through here straight to the garage.
मैंने मुख्य सड़क पर एक आदमी तैनात किया है। अगर उसे पुलिस दिखी तो वह फोन कर देगा, लेकिन मैं छोड़कर नहीं जाना चाहता... (टेलीफोन की घंटी बजती है) चलो! वे हमारे पीछे हैं। यहाँ से सीधे गैरेज की तरफ।
INTRUDER : How do I know that you are telling the truth?

GERRARD : Oh, don’t be a fool. Look for yourself.

(Gerrard opens door and steps away. Intruder leans forward to inspect it, with his side towards Gerrard, but with the revolver ready. As he turns his head, Gerrard gives him a push into the cupboard, knocking the revolver out of his hand. He slams the door and locks it, picks up the revolver and goes to the phone, where he stands with the gun pointed at the cupboard door.
जेरार्ड दरवाज़ा खोलता है और एक तरफ हट जाता है। घुसपैठिया उसकी जाँच करने के लिए आगे झुकता है, उसका एक हिस्सा जेरार्ड की तरफ है, लेकिन रिवॉल्वर तैयार है। जैसे ही वह अपना सिर घुमाता है, जेरार्ड उसे अलमारी के अंदर धक्का दे देता है, जिससे रिवॉल्वर उसके हाथ से गिर जाती है। वह धड़ाक से दरवाज़ा बंद करके ताला लगा देता है, रिवॉल्वर उठाता है और फोन के पास जाता है, जहाँ वह अलमारी के दरवाज़े की तरफ बंदूक ताने खड़ा हो जाता है।)
INTRUDER : (rattles door and shouts) Let me out of here!
(दरवाज़ा खटखटाता है और चिल्लाता है) मुझे यहाँ से बाहर निकालो!
GERRARD : Hello. Yes, speaking. Sorry I can’t let you have the props in time for rehearsal, I’ve had a spot of bother — quite amusing. I think I’ll put it in my next play. Listen, can you tell our friend the Sergeant to come up here at once? You’ll probably find him in the Public Bar.
